NFL - American Football 2010

Well that one died, but as the pre season has started, then I thought it time to wind it up again (even though it is still the cricket season - football/soccer please take note).

Well the annual soap opera that is Bret Favre is underway, but I think we are all very bored by it now. Many people think that if the playoff loss last year was his last game it would not represent his career, but I thought it did to a great extent, he was a gambler, and he often gambled too much.

Jimmy Jones is taking pot shots at McNabb as Redskins QB, I am with him as usual on that.

The Eagles still have my most hated player, so it is definitely the Cowboys and Giants for me in that division.

The Jets are on a reality show in the US, has anyone seen it? Apparently, from reports, there we a few are a few words like 'the' 'and' 'if' and 'now' which are not bleeped out from Rex Ryan's speeches. Darrelle Revis and The Jets are talking without the media posturing, I can't see him not being there.

Looks like the days of the NFL preview magazines have been superseded by the internet, unless anyone knows where to buy one these days.

I'll have ago at some pick in a week or two, I will say that without a doubt that the two Western Divisions will again be the weakest in each conference.

New Orleans will still be good, I think the Falcons too. Dallas I like the look of, and then there are a few solid teams Green Bay, probably Minnestota, Arizona, The Giants.

I think the best of the AFC have fallen back into the pack, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, New England, Baltimore, all look to be getting a bit long in the tooth at key positions, but have good coaches. Will Jim Caldwell actually have an expression on his face at some point this season?

The Chargers will win the West, and they are good, but I just find them like The Eagles of the last few years, do not quite have it to get through to the big game. I will try and not be so nasty about the AFC West teams this year, especially as Denver will be looking up at the division leaders from week 1.

Really looking forward to seeing if Tim Tebow can cut it in the NFL, obviously I hope so, and he could be very entertaining. As for the coach, I really do not see him pulling the team together and making anything of them.

I do think that in Jason Campbell The Raiders do finally have a good QB, and it is probably a good home for him after being kicked around at the Redskins for the last few years. They might well be a much better team.

Obviously there will be teams who surprise us by rising to the top, teams who disappoint, injuries, arguments.

I also wonder what we will see here in the UK. I am sure Channel 5 have ditched all sports, so Sky will probably have all the Sunday night games, and ESPN have picked up the Monday night games. I really hope that Mike Carlson will be with us this year, but if ESPN show the games in the way NASN did (US feed, lots of UK adverts in the US ad slots, and no studio coverage) then it is unlikely that he will find a home there. If they did have him, I would buy a subscription, if not, it is unlikely.

Anyway, just a few weeks and we will be in it all.

Some really nice games yesterday. Big test for Miami against the Pats tonight. The Jets seem to be the team to beat in this division.

The Browns won yesterday so all is good in the world again....

Buckeyes won on Saturday (bit of a bum squeaker though) so the Universe is in harmony now as well....

Ravens @ Steelers was superb, really tough football.

Since I was catching up on the Sky+ I skipped the Washington @ Philly, sorry but I could not get excited. I may go back to watch the dog killer getting 'crunched' though.

I did watch the Chicago @ Giants game, I made it all the way through. I was never a great fan of Cutler when he was at Denver, but supported him as 'our man', but seeing him with Chicago I could really indulge in some shadenfreude with his sack fest.

To be honest I think Mike Martz is probably the right coordinator for Cuttler, a big arm gambling quarterback, but he really needs to learn that his line can not hold off a NFL defense for more than a few seconds. He just looked like a rabbit in the headlights. I still think it could be a good combination though as the season progresses, even if I am unlikely to support the Bears.

Nearly at the quarter stage of the season, and who would have though Kansas would be the only undefeated team? Good for them, although I will say the opposite when they knock Denver out of the playoffs in a few weeks no doubt.

I recorded MNF but couldn't bring myself to watch this debacle. Frown

How the mighty are fallen, I watched the Dallas @ Minnesota game last night, and I could see why the two teams were 1:3.

It isn't as if Dallas are a bad team, they can defend, their offense can move. It is just hard to defend drives when you give away first downs on penalties constantly, and the same of the offense.

Watched the 49'er game last week, and boy are they bad. A couple of drives of pure brilliance, and several drives of utter incompetence. Their opponents just need to wait through the good play, and then roll them over during the bad.

I might hope that would be the case in a couple of weeks at Wembley, but I would prefer to watch a good game, but with the Broncos winning (obviously).

I was wrong about the NFC coming up the the level of the best AFC teams, The Steelers, Ravens, Patriots and Jets do look the class of the league.

Not sure about Indianapolis, and much as liked them in the past, I can have no enthusiasm for a team coached by a man who makes Andy Murray like bright and exuberant.

I thought the same thing very sloppy play on both sides.

Half way through the Monday night game, Vikings @ Packers.

The refereeing of the games is getting silly, if someone catches a ball, it should be 'a catch', not some long winded debate about if the ball moves or is in contact with the ground.

Everyone in the stadium could see the play in the in-zone at the end of the first half was a catch.

I would even argue that it was a catch, even it it were thrown by Philip Rivers (Chargers) against the Broncos at Mile High, it was that much of a catch.

Winge over.

So Jaimie are you at Wembley today? Just turned on one of our football networks and realized the Broncos and 49'ers are just about to start play in London.

Enjoy

Had the same thought - I hope he is there enjoying himself, watching Denver, in particular, as he is a fan.

Bit late onto this thread as i don't visit here too often - went to see the Bucks play the Steelers whilst in Florida in Sept - the bucks (my team) got hammered by 40 odd points to 13.

But it was a brill event - surrounded by fab steelers fans who made the day IMO...

Massive crowd! Roll Eyes I think they were all walking about in London Town, rather than at the game. Smile

It was actually pretty packed with a great side show. Michelle Williams sang the American anthem and Jeff Beck played God Save The Queen, with a little homage to Mr Hendrix.

BTW, Miami has now 4 wins on the road and not a single game won at home - maybe we should demolish our stadium. Confused

Were you there too MilesSmiles? Got home about 3.30 this morning.

A little disappointed Denver lost, dull first half but a good second half. but Denver having two touchdowns taken off the scoreboard for penalties. I couldn't hear what the 15 year one was, but have a flick the recording today.

Still worth it to go and finally see my tam after being a fan for quarter of a century, but maybe in Denver would be better next time, and after they have fired this coach (not long to wait for that I suspect).

Big pot of tea now, and time to catch up on the rest of yesterdays games.

No, had to do Trick or Treat with the kids but watched it on Sky.

Did a meteorite hit the NFL this week? The dinosaurs seem to be be falling fast.

McNabb benched, Randy Moss released, Favre carted off.

OK two of those do not surprise me, but Moss getting homesick for New England, and swearing his way to a release.

How much of a mess are The Vikings in, OK not as bad as Dallas.

And while I am throwing stones, I did say to my partner that The Broncos coach would get sacked at the end of this year, if we have to wait that long. Just how many one or two yard runs do we need to see start drives before he realises that it is a waste of time, and losses any momentum they might have have.

On the other hand, Steelers @ Saints, great game. Pats, Ravens, Giants, Colts, Jets, Titans and good starts to Kansas, Oakland, Tampa (best team in the league according to their coach, good for him), StLouis, some fun teams out there.

....Re Dallas ..I reckon Wade Phillips hasn't long left to hang on to his job...it seems he's taking the flak for not being more of a disciplinarian (ie not cutting out all those stupid penalties that have killed our season) although obviously losing Romo isn't his fault.

...Who will Jerry go for is he is dumped? ....no real idea tbh ....but the bottom line is this team ain't as good as most of us thought it was and it needs major surgery....

Jon Gruden has been mentioned, with the expected flip from player friendly coach to disciplinarian, but they will have to wait until the end of the season for Gruden and some other similar candidates to be free of current contracts.

Meanwhile in Dallas...the "dead man walking" has erm'...walked (or rather was pushed) I guess having 40+ points scored against you in God's own stadium was one humiliation too far and Wade was inevitably sacked ..

..but please let there be no repeat of THAT 1-15 season from some years back!
....no chance of America's Team being the first team to win a superbowl at home either!

It's never ideal to dump a coach mid season but Jerry really had little choice - Let's hope Jason Garrett can turn things around.
Posted on: 09 November 2010 by JamieL_v2
I don't think Jerry Jones had any option after the humiliation of Sunday nights game. That was painful to watch.

I can't imagine that Wade Phillips is anything but relieved either.

WHat Jason Garrett can do I don't know. Once the hottest prospect as a new coach, now a lame duck replacement?

Sad, I know may people love to see Dallas fail, but unlike the 1989 1:15 season, this is not breaking in future stars, this is the end of a bad fall. I hope they bounce back faster and better than tams like Detroit (with whom they share the upcoming Thanksgiving home games).

Personally just waiting for Josh McDaniels to join Wade Phillips on the sacked list.

Nice final drive by the Falcons, they do surprise me this year.
Posted on: 14 November 2010 by MilesSmiles
3 wins and 91 points for Florida teams, but at what a cost for Miami.

Unconfirmed reports have both Chads out for the season which means our #3 QB will be the starter and we need a back up QB in a hurry. Eek
