AV Processors
Posted by: GeraldUK on 08 December 2010
I've seen Marantz have just released a new av processor with all the bells and whistles for 1600 quid. There is no chance of an av3 coming guys so what is everyone doing ?
Posted on: 08 December 2010 by Jaseamondo
there is also the new audiolab 8200av for about £1200 or the onkyo PR-SC5508 for around £2000, what everyone else is doing is listening to music

"im doing that too when the movies arent on !"
Yeah I knew you would be lol,Naim forum eh!!
I actually nearly sold all my Naim stuff earlier this year to get a top end av system, I really like my films too, after auditioning various av pre amps/receivers I just could not live with any of them for music, I almost convinced myself I could live with the musical compromise, I couldn't thankfully. I do wish Naim would release an new av preamp, can't see it though like you said.

For me there is virtually no advantage changing my Av2 thats fed by an oppo 83se
but...I don't understand why that audiolab processor only has 3 rear hdmi's surely thats not enough. My setup isn't too complex but Sky HD, PC, PS3, Bluray already adds up to 4!

I don't know why they would only include 3 hdmi inputs, but they probabyl think that those are only or mainly for inputs that require hdmi, i.e. dts hd, dd hd etc.
Your Sky HD does not support any audio formats that would require HDMI. You can just as well use Toslink or coax.
But still, taking your PC into account and you basically having two BluRay-Players, you would use all three anyway. Although your PS3 isn't used as a BluRay-player and could again be connected by Toslink or coax.

The new audiolab has four in one out hdmi sockets and will retail for £1,299.

What I don't like about audio via hdmi (apart from needing an additional hdmi cable) ist that the video signal needlessly needs to be routed through another component.
In my case all non-Naim is located under the TV. A high-end preamp might be allowed access to my rack. That means I would need to go from underneath the TV (source) to my rack and then bakc again, just so I can get audio.
If at least the sources had two hdmis. That way you could use one for audio and one for video.

There are several BluRay players with 2 HDMI outputs. But it's considered as "high-end" feature, therefore usually only at higher price levels.
- Denon DVD-A1UD
- Marantz UD9004
- Pioneer BDP-LX91
- Panasonic DMP-BDT300
could be the least expensive available now?
plays 3D (for who it concerns...)
- Oppo BDP-93
not out yet...
Probably others, I don't remember right now.

My local friendly HiFi emporium has the 93 on dem.
Sales start mid jan and there is a Music biased 95 to come in march.
So i hope that santa can be a bit more patient.
83 is a definite , but is the 95 worth the extra money to have a better quality audio .

Denon DVD-A1UD Blu-Ray which does indeed have 2 HDMI outputs which can be set for separate audio and video feeds
Denon AVR 4310 which connects to the DVD using a 'Denon Link' cable so a direct multichannel digital audio stream can be sent to its DACs ( multi channel analog signal links not needed). In the case of Blu-ray HD audio it provides a clock control to sync the two for best audio quality.

I have yet to find an AV procesor that deals with HD audio better than analogue out into the AV2. I have tried a number of HDMI solutions and they don't cut it for me.
HDMI audio is a real challenge, I am looking out for the UD9004 as I did not think the A1UD was fab enough ahead of the 3800/4010 Marantz.
I have also heard the 93 and 83 in my system, both are okay for audio, the 93 sounded better, but the 3800 is better IMO. The 95 could chgange all that.
I think, but don't know if there is proper bass management on the 93. This has always been a problem

Looking at the post above and going a little off topic it shows how good the AV2 was/is as a multichannel preamp also remembering that the preamp comes from the 112x era.
It is a shame that Naim has stopped production of the AV2 when they could have kept it going and concentrated more on its software reliability, up date its preamp and added all the functions of the UnitiQute which were nearly all there anyway. It would have made it a still very interesting worthwhile product without investing in the expensive ever changing buggy av race. RELIABILITY would have been key as looking at all the problem posts I think buying used would be a problem for me.
On topic, I would like to demo the audiolab route next time I am in England.

Another AV2 fan here. Mine's quite old now & works fine.
Used with my Oppo Bluray player doing the decoding for HD stuff it's excellent and a very adaptable, flexible processor.

Yes, I am +2.
In the Oppo thread I have compared:
Oppo HD DTS decode to 5.1 -> AV2
Oppo transcoding the HD DTS track for Coax -> AV2 and
DD via coax -> AV2.
It wasn't a complete whitewash, but the decode by the AV2 had far more impact, and is what I am going to continue to use for the moment.

I am also using an AV2, sound great with Bluray, it feeds a 252 and 250cb. Naim still support servicing of the AV2 so second hand should not be a problem.

I'm rather impressed with Arcam's newish AVR400. It sounds pretty good.

Hi Frank,
Is the Arcam AVR400 the best all rounder AV amp at this price point?
Presumably it's music performance is very good, but does it get necessarily all gung-ho when required on brain dead action movies?
How does it compare to the Pioneer SC LX- 83 or Marantz SR 7005 for a matter of interest, both of which seem to get great reviews?
Also, does the Arcam suffer from system glitches as widely reported like their new blu ray player or the AVR 600?
Many thanks
Rod

I can't seem to find the post but am I right when buying a used AV2 I should be looking for models manufactured 2006 onwards due to some internal changes made?
Many thanks

Hi Rod, at its price point I think the Arcam is very well judged. I think I prefer it to the SCLX-73 for its more organic sound, but I haven't tried it against the 83 or the Marantz. No glitches yet. The one that really glitched was the 500. That hurt. The initial 600s had a few issues but they're pretty much sorted as are most of the problems with the MBD-100.

Frank.

I am very interested in the 751 Cambridge Audio BR player, having tried the Oppo 95 I am still using my denon 3800, but the £800 Cambridge audio is tempting ( I am a big Dacmagic fan with the right power supply)
I think analogue into an AV2 will be hard to beat tbh

Has anyone compared the new Audiolab 8200AP processor? It appears that a few have now emerged into the field and there have been positive reviews singling out the emphasis on sound quality rather than AV 'features'.
I've been looking out for a decent second-hand AV2 for a while to be fed by a Denon 3800BD blu-ray player via multi-channel analogue outputs, so I'd be keen to hear whether anyone has compared these two processors in their systems.
