Dame Joan Sutherland

Posted by: Chillkram on 22 September 2007

I watched a portrait of the great soprano on the biography channel this morning and was absolutely taken with her voice. Not being a particular afficianado of the opera I would be grateful for some pointers in the direction of her best recordings (on vinyl of course!).

Dear Mark,

Neither am I an opera buff, but her voice is extra-ordinary. She worked with Pavarotti as well, and there must be some special recording with these two which show-cases their talents?

I hope someone comes up with one or two first recomendations in this!

Her 2CD Decca set "The Art Of The Prima Donna", recorded early in her career with the Covent Garden Orchestra under Molinari-Pradelli, shows her at her very best. Great repertoire too, as she set out to record the most famous soprano pieces and dedicated each to a famous earlier singer.

It's at mid-price on Decca Legends (467 115 2): sorry, but I don't know how to post an image of the cover. You can get it for about £12 if you look around.

Of the Sutherland-Pavarotti collaborations, my favourite is Turandot on Decca. Also features some other great singers.

You can hear a sample when you come over Mark (a spur to fixing a date!)

Bellini's La Norma was sort of 'killed' by two sopranos, Maria Callas and Joan Sutherland.

Another opera where Joan Sutherland was reportedly never surpassed is Lucia di Lammermoor.

Personally I struggle with Joan Sutherland's later recordings. In '71 I think she recorded Donizetti's L'Elisir d'Amore with Luciano Pavarotti who was then in his best years, I wouldn't hesitate.

Thanks Gents I'll have a gander based on those recommendations.

James.

I'll drop you a line to fix it up soon.

"The age of belcanto" - highly recommended !

WAS originally on vinyl, but now on CD - once it's back in the market again, as sadly it's currently out of print.
A beautiful collection of opera arias, with "La Stupenda" at her best; on recordings from the early 60'ies
