Compact camera recommendations?

Posted by: seagull on 28 December 2010

Hi all. I managed to drop and break my camera today (a Fuji something or other). Time for a replacement.

Main use is just point and shoot family snaps, indoors and out.

Budget around £200.

As the sales are on it's probably a good time to be looking. I don't mind if it is "last year's model" if that means getting a bargain.

Got a new for old home insurance? So maybe no cost?

George asked a similar question recently, do a quick search as I can't remember the thread title.

I bought a Canon S95 a couple of months back.

It's a little outside your price range (now £270 - £285 depending on what day you look at Amazon) but it is an absolutely unbelievable bit of kit and worth paying slightly extra for IMO.

Lovely to use and unobtrusive. The picture quality is far better than you'd think it would be 'for a compact' and you can use it as point 'n' shoot or full manual. Believe me the quality over other compacts we've had through the years is a different league and it is genuinely pocket sized. Mine is one of the reviews on Amazon site. Everyone else who owns one seems to agree it's fantastic!

Canon SX210 IS. I won't spoil the surprise by telling you anything about it, but if you can't stretch to the S95, the SX210 IS looks great value at about £170, recently at warehouseexpress.

Don't think you can go wrong with a Panasonic Lumix. Not sure which model would suit your budget. I've got a Lumix FS15, now superseded, and it's a beautiful little camera. It's easy to use and produces photos of unbelievable quality. And they have Leica lenses.

As good as the Panasonic compacts are, I'm not sure their lenses should be mentioned as if they're from the same stable as the rangefinder legends.
But yep, have a look at the Panasonics too. Just don't get confused by the bewildering choices out there. I'm dreading the day I need to buy a new camera, and I'll be limited to a Canon DSLR!!

I'd agree with Tony. I always tend to use Canon cameras and when I needed to replace an old Ixus earlier in the year it was the SX210 IS that I opted for. A brilliant little piece of kit.

The Fuji X100 looks sweet, it brings out the Leica M lover in me.

The new Sony's with the thin body and huge lenses looks v. interesting.

Thanks guys. I got a bit lost when I looked at compact cameras, I didn't realise there was so much choice it is a bit bewildering.

I've gone for the SX210 as that seems to do everything we want (when I showed Mrs S she just said 'Yes, get that one") for a reasonable price. Canon have a money back deal at the moment on some of their models so it cost £182 from Amazon less £30 cashback.

Great deal! You (& Mrs S) won't be disappointed.
