"I have a UniQute and it works perfectly"
Posted by: Sloop John B on 20 December 2010
There are so many threads about Unpnp and freezes and N-stream problems with UniQute (and very little moderator activity on these threads which I find surprising)
So I'm presuming the happy just don't post...............
.....so how many of you "have a UniQute that works perfectly?"
(as mentioned in another thread there is one waiting under the tree for me so I need a few tension relieving posts from happy users).

I haven't had any issues. I use mine with a Unitiserve and a Netgear NAS.

I hope to report that on mine when I pick it up after Christmas - I don't intend using UPnP as I'm not confident about things that have small letters in the middle of their naim.quote:o how many of you "have a UniQute that works perfectly?"

I wonder if Jimmy Stewart would have had a Qute in "It's a Wonderful Life"

Ok I am a trade member.. but I do love my Qute and it works fine.. hope somebody believes me..
Most problems occur because of limited knowledge of UPnP and networks. Your dealer can help you when needed.

SJB,
as Ricardo syas above, there are usually so many variables in network and associated equipment and little experience, and most issues boil down to this.
I'm not sure what a moderator can do here, and personally, while I know a fair bit about Naim, I'm not an IT expert and my experience with network audio devices is not a patch on my experience with turntables, arms and cartridges. However, I have spent time with computer audio, HDX, and the Uniti, one of which I installed last April and which is working well. Only issue has been thanks to a poor router, which was easily solved - result!. Anyway, the Naim tech guys aren't on the forum all day, every day so it's one reason why, for networkable devices in particular, there's a sticky at the top of this room:

My second Qute works fine
The first had a defective DAB tuner and had to be returned.
Most problems are fixed by avoiding the Qute's wireless, either by going wired or using a wireless bridge.

Hi John.
-1. Drop out and uPnP issues.
I cannot go wired and I don't want to bridge with Airport Express as surely that defeats the 'one box solution'. Why is the Qute running 802.11g?
Season's greetings

My Qute works very well. My only complaint is the absence of any indication of FM signal strength.
I would also like to see any firmware updates made available for end customers to apply should they want to.
My Netgear ReadyNAS Duo, which as two non mirrored disks behaved very oddly this morning. I could not see any data on either disk and Frontview would not work. I think the problem was caused by a power failure which lead to the Duo running a lengthy disk check as it booted.

Yep, dead easy. The only problem I had getting N-Stream to work was my fault.

Hi Richard,
I take your point and I appreciate that IT guys can't be scouring the forum day and night but it may be no harm for them to give a half an hour a day and post such things like
"this is a known problem with IOS 4.1 and we are working on a solution"
"This is more than likely a router problem please email us directly at ......."
I realise that once computers are involved there are so many variable at play and problems can be so specific and hard to sort out.
So perhaps it's more important from a marketing point of view rather than a support point of view to have a little bit more "Naim" comment on these problems. The impression given at the moment is that the Qute is horrensously flaky in certain areas and I think it behoves you to counter that.
all the best and Happy Christmas
John

Hi John
Well I am one who has commented on the Qute on other threads; I hope that nobody thinks that anything I have said implies criticism or dissatisfaction with our Qute. This was certainly NOT my intention. Indeed let me say that we (my wife and I) are extremely happy with it. It now resides in our main system (never intended that), we have added the nDAC and this weekend an XPS to wring the absolute maximum from it; within our budget.
Let me assure you that it sounded pretty damn good on it's own from day one; and just got better.
I have had minor issues, irritations really, based around the occasional album not playing or refusing to play after having played previously. Lack of understanding of the selection and replay process on my part (what part each component plays or fulfils) has made it hard to work out the best way to overcome this.
However, last week Phil (Tech Support) picked up on a comment I had made and posted a very clear and precise explanation of what the Qute/Unity/NDX did and didn't do in the chain. This part I now understand and shows that the 'problem' is NOT caused by the Qute which is extremely useful to know.
To aid understanding by many of us what is needed IMHO is a kind of 'Dummies Guide To' explaining each part of the process and what each component fulfils. For example, assume music files are on a NAS, then if a server is run on a PC/Mac, does that PC/Mac become a part of the replay chain i.e. do the files past through the PC/Mac and therefore risk being degraded?
You have a great little box to open at Christmas John, however, should you disagree, and it's going at a reasonable price ........................well mine never did make it to the office.
Regards
Peter

Mine works perfectly.
It is connected wirelessly to my home network and I stream WAV files from my UnitiServe in the main system, hi res FLAC files from a LaCie network drive, and web radio.
I don't have an antenna so I'm not using FM or DAB, maybe I'll try this in future.
I also have an iPod plugged into it.
My network consists of an Apple Time Capsule plus two 802.11n AirPort Express. Until a few weeks ago I had a single 802.1b AirPort Express and often had trouble while streaming. Replacing it with two faster AirPorts completely solved any issue.
I control the Qute with n-Stream app from my iPhone or iPad. I must admit sometimes I'm a bit annoyed by its delay, the UnitiServe (controlled with n-Serve app) is much faster.
I really like the Qute.

Well I'm nearly all up and ready.
I got a Buffalo Linkstation NAS and have moved my iTunes library to it.
I've downloaded the n-stream app to my iphone.
I've disconnected the Nait 2 and NACA5 so there is space for UniQute with Nordost speaker cable.
I'm hoping Christmas day will bring a plug and play moment.
I have got n-Sats to go with the Qute but I think it would not be conducive to Christams day cheer to go messing with speakers in the front room so I think I'll stick to my old trusty JPW Gold mini-monitors and maybe go mad with speakers and positioning on St Stephen's Day.

Hi SJB...
There's many reasons why we don't necessarily post massvely on the forums - I guess firstly is they can be a huge drain on time to keep trawling through the posts on here looking for requests for help (this is why there's the stickies asking for support requests to come to me or Steve Hopkins directly).
Secondly is that forums aren't partcularly useful when it comes to nailing down issues with kit - detail gets lost in discussions that get pulled off subject etc. and things can end up as a bit of a free-for-all producing a lot of irrelevant noise.
The UPnP on the Uniti and UnitiQute have actually proven to be incredibly trouble-free when used with the UnitiServe and the UPnP server and client were (obviously) written to work together but we have no control on what 3rd party UPnP server software providers do with their applications - sometimes versions of UPnP server applications that work perfectly one release have been updated and suddenly have issues - or the most common thing is that people set up UPnP server apps on their PCs with little understanding of what they're doing and how other applications (such as firewalls) interact with them. Again, trying to diagnose those issues isn't really appropriate for the forums.
Anyway - just to add to the list, my UnitiQute - and recently, NDX - have been really stable too...

I have had my QUTE for a week now, and I am very happy with it. It is working perfectlyl on wireless, despite a weak signal.
I added a NAS to the network last weekend and initially had a problem seeing this new UPnP server as well as the orginal one running on a PC. Having added a new wireless router to replace the Telco (you know who who) provided one, the NAS is working fine, but I cannot see the original one which is still connected to the Telco provided router. I think it must be a firewall on the router blcking the discovery service, I can it with a UPnP control point on the PC.
Now I just need to rip all my CD's. What is the going rate to get the kids doing this?

I have two UnitiQutes and the only issue I have had has been with connecting to a wireless network when the signal is weak.
Navigating a large library on an iPod is also rather tedious as you do not appear able to skip to albums starting with a particular letter (for example). This seems rather odd as I can do it when connecting to the same library through uPnP.
