Kicking off the new season's thread with some sad news.
Leicester Tigers' Harry Ellis is to retire at 28 because of persistent left knee problems.
On the bright side, Leicester does of course have Ben Youngs (and perhaps Harry could remain involved in a mentoring role).
But it's always unfortunate when a player (wherever) has to retire (early) because of unresolvable injury problems.

Youngs off. He has had a brilliant game. Let's hope Care carries it on.

29-13. What a game!

England let Australia off the hook there. They had them on the rack and made too many errors due to lack of precision. They could have put them away there. I hope they don't regret that.

Oh dear. A poor long line out has gifted the Aussies a try. Aussies are back in it. 29-18 with 15 to go. If England lose this they will kick themselves.

Ashton 6 inches away from his hat-trick. England not quite showing the killer instinct at the moment. They have have killed the game by now.
Flood nails the penalty. 32-18.

Australia need 2 converted tries, but they have really got their game together now and could get them.
Posted on: 13 November 2010 by Chillkram
England need a cool head now.

Penalty in front of the posts. 35-18 with 3 minutes to go. It's all over now and England thoroughly deserve this victory. It would be nice to finish with the try that their play has deserved late on.

Well, that was the best 80 minutes I have seen from an England team against a very good side. They could and should have had a couple more tries and it is perhaps the only criticism of them that they lacked the killer instinct on just a couple of instances in the last quarter of the game.
The score does not flatter England.
Everyone played well, but stand out performers were Ashton, Cueto, Palmer, Lawes and Ben Youngs was absolutely brilliant!
England proved they can play proper rugby today. They could have had 50.

I see Wales lost to SA narrowly. Did anyone see that game?
On to Scotland v the All Blacks. Come on, Jim, I'm rooting for your team now!

It'll be interesting to see what the Southern Hemisphere press make of that performance from England.

Sydney Morning Herald:
"The Wallabies have been taught a rugby lesson by an energised England, suffering one of their worst ever defeats to the old enemy, 35-18 at Twickenham.
England out-enthused the Australians, who showed again there is a flip side to the unpredictable flamboyance of their talented backs.
The 17-point defeat equalled the margin of losses in 1973 and 1976, while the 35 points conceded were the most ever by an Australian side to England.
The much-vaunted scrummaging battle barely eventuated as an adventurous England threw the ball wide and counter-attacked at every opportunity in good conditions in London.
Winger Chris Ashton bagged a double for the home side, while electric Wallabies fullback Kurtley Beale also scored two.
But it was England five-eighth Toby Flood who proved the difference, capitalising on his side's absolute dominance to boot nine from nine and inspire the first of many renditions of Swing Low Sweet Chariot for the 80,000-plus crowd.
By contrast, Australia's goalkicking woes continued with winger James O'Connor, who took over the duties from Matt Giteau last week, managing just three goals from seven attempts.
But Martin Johnson's young, under-pressure England side were deserved winners, while Australia's defence and composure fell away."

The Australian:
"A PERFEFT goalkicking display by five-eighth Tony Flood has spearheaded England to an astonishing 35-18 win over Australia in their rugby union Test at Twickenham.
Both sides scored two tries but England beat Australia at its own adventurous game. England dominated the collisions and continually bustled the Wallabies off their running game.
This may indeed be a defining Test for England. Certainly now it has to be regarded as serious contender for next year’s World Cup."

One swallow does not a summer make and England need to follow this with a sustained run of similar performances to really establish themselves as world cup contenders. One could also argue that Australia would not have expected England to play that way and that it will be the next step in their progress to beat teams who do come prepared for an exciting, expansive England.
But it surely is an enormous step in the right direction and a more sustained level of performance than the one at HQ against France a couple of seasons ago. First time I have ben excited about an England performance for many years.

It's looking dire for Scotland.

Some good defence at the end of the half from Scotland and they have managed to keep the All Blacks down to only 4 tries!

Sportal.co.nz:
"The Wallabies suffered their first spring-tour defeat after England produced a sublime display to record an emphatic 35-18 victory in front of a capacity crowd at Twickenham.
Martin Johnson's men showed their intent from the opening whistle and were unlucky not to lead by more than 10 points at the interval.
The hosts dominated every facet of what was a breathtaking match played at breakneck speed, and in the process, sent a serious warning to their southern-hemisphere rivals ahead of the 2011 World Cup."

Oh dear, sorry Jim. Scotland 3-49 New Zealand and seven tries scored. I think the referee took sympathy on the Scots and ended the game a minute and a half early!

A narrow win against Bath in the Luncheon Voucher today. Still, a win's a win!

I happened to have a house-full of scottish folk staying over the weekend who insisted on watching the match on by projector TV system.
Not a happy bunch at the end...
