Forum Rugby Club - 2010-11 Season

Kicking off the new season's thread with some sad news.
Leicester Tigers' Harry Ellis is to retire at 28 because of persistent left knee problems.
On the bright side, Leicester does of course have Ben Youngs (and perhaps Harry could remain involved in a mentoring role).
But it's always unfortunate when a player (wherever) has to retire (early) because of unresolvable injury problems.

"Allez, allez, allez, Wasps, Wasps Wasps!"
Just got back off holiday, Tosser

You taking advantage of a lack of defence for an excellent team like the Tigers

All set to see whether England can continue their progress against Samoa? I realise that they do not present the same standard of opposition as the Tri-Nations teams but they do hold a different type of challenge and can be pretty physical. Wales struggled with that aspect of Fiji's game last night and it will be interesting to see how England cope.
I hope they do not take their foot off the gas for this one and use it as an opportunity to further sharpen their newly discovered cutting edge. They will need to be intelligent and pick their battles in this one.
A difficult game could knock their confidence back.

I would expect to see a few yellow cards shown today

England look to be struggling at the moment. The Samoan physicality does appear to be an issue for them.
England 0-3 Samoa after 7 minutes but should have been 6.

Great move by England, nearly a try but a foot in touch means it is not allowed. The pass from Ashton was forward anyway.
More of that please, though!

It looks as though England have the scrum. They appear to have stepped up the physicality too, with a bulldozing reminder from Sheridan that England do not play soft!

Another great move from England but another try denied by a 'forward pass'. Perhaps they should go back to dark grey shirts, black ones usually manage to fend off forward pass penalties!

Half time and after a shaky start, England have taken control of this game and it is their physicality that is troubling the Samoans. England have shown some good play but have let Samoa off the hook with a little lack of precision in the execution.
The number of tackles Samoa have had to put in, 77 to England's 17, will start to tell in the second half, I think.
England 6-3 Samoa.

Oh, dear!
1st minute after the restart and Samoa score a try. Just shows that England cannot afford to squander their opportunities.
England did not front up to the Samoans there and were caught cold.
England 6-8 Samoa.

Great move from England. That's more like it! England move it quickly through the hands and get it out wide to Ashton who draws his man and puts Banahan in for an unchallenged score.
Brilliant.
England 13-8 Samoa.

That's loosened it up a bit! A breakaway try for Croft from an interception by Banahan.

Try for Samoa at the end to give them some reward for their endeavour.

Overall, I thought it was a decent game for England and by no means a backward step. They continued to be ambitious and only a few inches prevented a further three tries. England lacked a little precision compared to last week, but Samoa were hard-hitting and resolute in defence. They are a tough side to play against and put Ireland to the sword last week.
England's back three continue to play an expansive game and with practice will come the consistency. They will have learned a fair bit from this game and it will help to keep their feet on the ground.
From an individual performance perspective, Lawes continues to impress with some dynamic loose play as did Sheridan with some big, bullocking carries against a very physical team. Hape, in the centre, looks like our own prospective Sonny Bill Williams with lots of gainline breaks and some great offloading. Ashton, Foden and Youngs are shoo-ins and Cueto had another good game. I felt we missed Croft in the back row though.
Overall, nothing to get over-excited about, but a satisfactory performance and some useful learnings for the management team.

Wow! What a game at Adams Park. I was going to get tickets for that one but couldn't find time during the day to make the call!
B***er! 33-25 to Wasps and a real thriller I think. That rounds off the sporting weekend nicely thanks with victories for:
England RU, Wasps, QPR and England A cricket team.
Supplemented nicely by defeats for:
Cardiff, Boks, Chelsea, Arsenal, Australia A cricket team
The only blot was a dull win for Tigers...still you can't have everything, that would be greedy!

A win's a win Anyway, thanks Pests for keeping Exiles in close sight points wise.
As in the previous couple of seasons (now what did Tigers win...??) things'll get better at WR after the Autumn internationals, and the development squad isn't playing.

Watched Saints v Lirish tonight. It finished 35-23 to Saints and the performance was brilliant, considering their players who are away on International duty. They got their bonus point try and then took their foot off the gas to let Lirish come back with 2 late tries.
They are a joy to watch and I genuinely believe they could finish second this year.

Come on England, time to cement your progress this afternoon against the Springboks. Apparently, if England win today it takes them to second in the world rankings. I think this would be a little flattering as it has only been a recent revival of form and there are a few teams who could contest that position. France, Ireland, Australia and the Boks themselves would have plenty to say about that I'm sure.
I also think that whilst confidence is currently high, they need to be cautious of a wounded Springbok team looking to regain some pride. They also have a few players missing so perhaps it won't be a true reflection of their position anyway. England need to win first and foremost and put on the style if and when they are clear. I hope they are not over confident and fling it around too much, too early.
South Africa are still favourites in my mind.
