Forum Rugby Club - 2010-11 Season

Kicking off the new season's thread with some sad news.
Leicester Tigers' Harry Ellis is to retire at 28 because of persistent left knee problems.
On the bright side, Leicester does of course have Ben Youngs (and perhaps Harry could remain involved in a mentoring role).
But it's always unfortunate when a player (wherever) has to retire (early) because of unresolvable injury problems.

I cannot bring myself to say the words, it's like asking for a half at the bar

Apparently Venter was under orders to not say anything that would get him another fine, hence the vague interview

James, are you going to the game tomorrow
Posted on: 18 December 2010 by JWM
I had very much hoped to as part of the end of term trip to collect daughter. But unfortunately our friends who were supposed to be coming up to see us today cried off, so I was pressed to do the Leicester run today because of paranoia about snow.
The nearest we got was the WR Tigers shop, where I got a nicer present than originally planned by Mrs JWM, as a consolation for missing the game.

Oh well not to worry at least you got quality time in the shop . On Wednesday my mother in laws neighbour
( he who has a season ticket ) turned up at my house and said he had to go to a Carol service which meant he could not go to the game ( I did question his sanity but I guess you would understand his predicament ) so therefore I have his ticket for tomorrow, happy days

Good win for Wasps today, 37 points and a bones against Dragons will do nicely. Tigers struggled against Perpignan today I thought, and Twelvetrees wasted quite a few points which should have sealed the game.
As for Gloucester, they really laboured against La Rochelle who played perfect European, counterpunch rugby and put them away 18-24.

I would agree about 36 wasting points but i would certainly disagree about the struggle, but i would also say that unfortunately Geordan Murphy lost us the game by back chatting the ref [who gave Perpignan another ten yards] thus making the penalty kickable which they duly did , but he only did this because Perpignan were not being penalised for constantly killing the ball, obstructing and being offside [which is how they made quick tackles]. I also noticed how they got away with high tackles as well. So next week we now have to go over the Severn and paste scarlets to stay in the competition. By the way it was absolutely bitterly cold at Welford road this afternoon, i had intended to have a few beers but it was that cold i went in search of coffee instead
Saints had a scare as well today and i think were it not for a red card and a sinbin for Cardiff at the end they might of lost

I think Cockers might get into hot water for being a bit forthright (if truthful) afterwards about the reffing, of killing the ball especially, though he might have made his comments general enough to get away with it.
I was forced to listen on R5. As you know, the commentators sit in the Crumbie Stand. Very atmospheric because you could hear the crowd - individual comments as well as 'Tiiiggeers'. You could also hear Cockers commenting at some volume from time to time (each time attention being drawn by the commentary team), which since the commentators use very close mics to minimise outside interference is saying something!

Very entertaining first half of rugby from Welford Rd. Plenty of multi-phase play, throwing the ball around, and five Tries (four of them Leicester's)
Posted on: 27 December 2010 by JWM
54-21. Whilst Leicester dominated the game, they weren't faultless. But a good run out to blow off the Christmas cobwebs. And Sale's three Tries were all well-deserved I thought.

And back in to 2nd place to boot

Another win ground out by the Tigers and that takes them to their rightful place at the top of the premiership table

Hats off to Exeter for a sterling effort, and making life so difficult for Tigers. LT didn't play badly, they played well, as did EC.
Also, well done Sale for giving Sarries a drubbing, and adding to Venter's memories to take away with him.

Well, we're now in the top four after a win against Newcastle today and looking good for the play offs.
A comfortable win in Leicester should cement our position!

Hope we might be able to meet up. I've just secured one of the last available tickets, will be sitting in Crumbie, next to aisle, in the block nearest the Clubhouse. (At the mo there are only about 20 left altogether, so another 24,000 sell-out - what other English Club could do that?)
As usual, Tigers are beginning to warm up nicely for the business end of the season.
It'll be a joy to get together for the Pests meet on 19th Feb. Here's looking at you, lads.
