Forum Rugby Club - 2010-11 Season

Kicking off the new season's thread with some sad news.
Leicester Tigers' Harry Ellis is to retire at 28 because of persistent left knee problems.
On the bright side, Leicester does of course have Ben Youngs (and perhaps Harry could remain involved in a mentoring role).
But it's always unfortunate when a player (wherever) has to retire (early) because of unresolvable injury problems.

A good start against Wales, but there were some wasted opportunities - especially that camp out on the Welsh line by the England forwards which resulted in a Welsh penalty.
Wales were imprecise and lacking in confidence to run I thought, and England were relatively comfortable. They will need to raise their game against Ireland and France though.

Who'd 've thunk it? Three posts in a row on this thread in which we all agree!
A far from perfect game made it highly watchable and entertaining. You just knew that whatever errors came they were likely to end up with advances by the other side. But an encouraging and more precise performance by Leices England against a physical opposition. A good start to the campaign, which I hope they can build on.
Had Wales gone forward half as much as they'd gone sideways, things may have been different. But then I guess it's tribute to the England defence that the Daffodils' attack was quite so lacklustre and hesitant.
Once upon a time, if you scored a Try you more or less hung your head in embarrassment. I don't mind a bit of celebration, it's an important part of the partnership between players and crowd in the modern mass media game, just like the dry ice, lights and fireworks (the ancient Romans would have loved tacky effects like that!!). But showboating before the ball is down (Ashton) could be rather dangerous, not just of dropping it altogether, but 'ball under control'. I note he was far more straight forward the second time!
Well-earned MoM for Toby Flood. Call me biased, but I think he's really coming on as an international standard Stand Off.
(The Wasps chaps must be rubbing their hands with glee that most of the Tigers' squad will be away on International duty on 19 Feb...!)

Close game and i really enjoyed sitting in the pub while watching it unfold, i noticed that the Welsh were not being penalised for NOT rolling away and as for Deacon i think he was daft and deserved the yellow card but there should also have been yellows for the Welsh for similar offences and would you not have expected a red card for the almost spear tackle on flood ????. Anyway Tigers obviously lost to Bath last night it being the Low Value cup game, but i do wonder if they celebrate after a win against a development side.
More than likely going to miss Castro`s performance this afternoon as i have a plumbing job to go and do but will be looking forward to seeing what the jocks can do and if they can repeat their performance after beating the Springboks in the autumn

What a shame for Italy. 11-10 ahead with 2 minutes to go and O'Gara drops a goal to break Italian hearts. They deserved the win today.

Yes it was a great shame, and although i could not watch it i was told by someone that was and he said the Italians were all over the Irish. Now just time for a quick shower then in front of the tv for the Jocks and French, i will be shouting for the Jocks

Great game 'twixt France and Scotland which finished 34-21. Who'd have thought Scotland would score three tries in Paris.........and still lose?!! Great stuff from both sides.

Hmmmm!

Wow! What a performance from England. You can decry the quality of the opposition, but this team were 2 minutes from beating Ireland last week! England just opened up Italy time after time by breaking the gainline then offloading to the multiple support runners that they had. It also helped that they won most of the setpiece play and the forwards steamrollered the (pretty decent) Italian pack in the loose.

Just noticed this:
That'll rouse the Tigers on here! The Six Nations does take its toll on the top teams. I remember it well!
Northampton | 15 - 29 (10 - 6) | Saracens | R |
Tries: Clarke, Diggin | Tries: Barritt, Stevens
Penalties: Myler | Penalties: Goode 4
Drop-goals: Barritt | |||
Conversions: Myler | Conversions: Goode 2
Franklins Gardens |

Yes excellent game apart from the middle of the second half when either England had too many options to try and exploit or got cocky.
Still England 2-0 up and Chris Ashton 6 tries from the two games. Hmmm.

Great game, and i know i said it would be a easy ish game for us but i did think that actually it would have been a lot closer but hey there you go i do believe we will win the world cup and i will stick my neck out here and say now that the semi finalists of the world cup will be England,France,South Africa and Austrailia as we all know and history shows that the All Blacks are chokers.
Roll on the 19th

Good to see England playing a multi-dimensional game at last. They remind me a little of the Jack Rowell team of the 90s. They are not the finished article by a long way and I suspect that they will be brought back down to earth during this Six Nations, probably by France, but they are definitely much further along than they have been approaching a World Cup than have been since 2003. They do not have the immovable defensive wall that the side of 2003 had, nor the wiley forwards, will to win or sheer bloody-mindedness they had, but they do appear to be more expansive and less predictable than that team.
The 2003 team were built on muscle and defence and other teams have caught up in that respect. I think 2011 may be too early for this side, but if the core stays together then 2015 may be a better target.

France win despite not playing well. Looks ominous. Ireland gave away far too many penalties.

Well have got the JINGLE out of "jingle bells" as we have already beaten the Tigers at Kingsholm this season, just have to work a bit harder to do the double ,
We have won at Welford Road more often than at the PESTs away, so who knows!
Jingle bells Jingle bells...
