Forum Rugby Club - 2010-11 Season

Kicking off the new season's thread with some sad news.

Leicester Tigers' Harry Ellis is to retire at 28 because of persistent left knee problems.

On the bright side, Leicester does of course have Ben Youngs (and perhaps Harry could remain involved in a mentoring role).

But it's always unfortunate when a player (wherever) has to retire (early) because of unresolvable injury problems.

It's alright, my forebears fought on the Field of Bosworth to win the right for Mark to make cheap pesty jokes about Leicester Tigers ... lame jokes are about as much sting as Pests have got at the moment...

And yet....it was we who had the last laugh this season and Tigers who had nothing!

Yet a prostituted last laugh from the lowly lower regions of mid-table mediocrity...

Not according to the rugby paper who seem to think there is a lot of tumble weed rolling about the Wasps forum.

Oh dear (and I mean that sincerely) it's terrible to see that all is seriously not well in High Wycombe.  It would be awful to see Wasps fall out of the Premiership and/or fold.  What would Tigers do for Welford Rd whipping boys?

Swansea Wasp, the article by David Walsh is indeed a stinging indictment of the way that things are currently perceived at Wasps.

Any potential Wasps supporter reading this, would have to think long and hard about buying a season ticket. The implication is that Wasps are a club in meltdown.

It requires a response by the club. Problem is that communicating real facts to the fans does not happen as far as Wasps are concerned.

How much is fact, how much is fiction? Gutfeel says that there is a lot of fact.

Any business worth it's salt must remember the old adage :

communicate or die

I've tried to remain positive, I really have.

I renewed with double devotion,
I critisised others on this forum for not being more positive,
I gave the club the benefit of the doubt - perhaps they were waiting for some new DOR to finish a contract before announcing a white knight to save us,
I even allowed myself to hope we had some big signings in the wings.
Once a Wasp, always etc etc.

But it's been too long. Too deafeningly silent. It is now clear the reason for the silence is: Wasps have no money. They can't keep the fans updated because they would have to admit they can't afford anyone.
Wasps cannot get a top DOR because they do not spend up to the cap to attract the best players.

Wasps are in crisis.

How naiive and blind a faithful supporter. Get ready for 2 years of gloom.....unless Mr Abramovitch takes a shine to funny shaped balls.

Neil Back appointed new coach of Rugby Lions

Former Leeds Carnegie coach Neil Back has shunned the top flight in favour of a five-year contract with fifth-tier Rugby Lions.

Neil Back appointed new coach of Rugby Lions
Gamble: Neil Back will take over at the National League Three Midlands club

His surprise move comes after Back left his post at Leeds in May when his side finished bottom of the Aviva Premiership.

Back said he was approached by player-turned-businessman Michael Aland, who takes over at the Warwickshire club on Tuesday, within an hour of his resignation.

He said fulfilling Aland’s dream of taking the Lions to the Premiership was a challenge big enough to tempt him to drop down the divisions.

Joining the National League Three Midlands club, Back said: “I received an approach from Michael in May, less than an hour after my resignation from Leeds Carnegie was announced. He sold me his vision of taking this famous club back to the top flight of English rugby, whilst doing something really meaningful for the town.”

Back conceded his new role might be considered a comedown for a World Cup winner with high aspirations.

“It is a big call for me having coached in the Aviva Premiership and I have asked myself whether it is a retrograde step given how ambitious I am,” he added.

“It’s not about money. Nor is this is an easy option, which is why I asked for a five-year contract. But I believe that turning around Rugby and getting the club to the Premiership would be a significant achievement and one I can use as a stepping stone to coaching at the very highest level.”

Back said he believed Rugby Lions could be in the Premiership within five to seven years.

Announcing his resignation in May, he said his time as head coach at Leeds had been “incredible” for his development.

Ben Gollings, the all-time record points scorer in sevens international rugby, will join him at Rugby as player/attack coach.

The two form an important element of the vision of former Rugby player and new club owner Aland, 47.

The owner and managing director of Vancouver-based Rugby Construction Group is set on building a club fit for Rugby town.

“I feel there is a lack of an academy for the developing world of rugby,” he said. “So my idea was to acquire a club in the UK and bring players through in a way conducive to the country they represent.

“But this is very much about giving the town of Rugby something of which it can be proud.”

Aland also plans a new 30,000-seat stadium with retractable roof, hotel and conference centre.

“Any time I put a company together I always start with as good a management team as I can get,” he said.

“I looked around the Premiership and the second Neil became available he was my No1 candidate.”

Hmm very interesting and in another article folks seem worried that this could be the death knell of Coventry rugby club ??????
