Kicking off the new season's thread with some sad news.
Leicester Tigers' Harry Ellis is to retire at 28 because of persistent left knee problems.
On the bright side, Leicester does of course have Ben Youngs (and perhaps Harry could remain involved in a mentoring role).
But it's always unfortunate when a player (wherever) has to retire (early) because of unresolvable injury problems.

If Mad Dog is off injured (again ... which is why LT didn't offer him the generous new contract he demanded), then we need the best man for the job, and that is Tom Croft.
Who?!!! Is he even in the squad?

Suddenly my nostrils are burning from the smell of bullshit, have you been on one of those American management courses lately where they fill you full of it

I think that's coming from the back of your own trousers! ......It's the fear of the London Wasps coming to Welford Rd and unmanning you Tigers!

This all reminds me rather of this...

Great first game of the afternoon, Edinburgh v Northampton. Edinburgh played some great offloading rugby and scored one of the tries of the season. In the end it was a narrow victory for Northampton, 27-31, with 3 tries each scored.

Munster marmalised Toulon this afternoon. Good to see Jonny playing well though.

Bonus point win for LW. Job done. I do think we are struggling in defence a little this season, though. Although we held out at the end, there were too many yards being made by Glasgow. I don't feel as confident in the defence as in years gone by as we are missing too many tackles.
Although the scrum was better today it is still an area of weakness.
Work to do.

The words Scrum and wasps should never be mentioned in the same sentence as they do not go together

Much more interested in Leeds Carnegie v Stade Francais up next.
Posted on: 17 October 2010 by deadlifter
I don't fancy Leeds chances
Posted on: 17 October 2010 by Chillkram
Leeds playing really, really well but not kicking their points. Looks like Stade are going to nick it without doing anything to earn it.
Posted on: 17 October 2010 by Chillkram
Real shame for Leeds. They have several opportunities to put Stade away and didn't take them. Stade were really on the rack for large parts of the game.
If they can learn to finish and kick their points they will be a very decent team indeed.

Richard Blaze announces rugby retirement
Poor bloke. Always a great shame when someone is forced to retire early. We can only wish him well. A blow to rugby - to Tigers (especially after Harry Ellis' forced retirement at the start of the season) and England.
From the Tigers' website:
Leicester Tigers forward Richard Blaze has been forced to announce his retirement from professional rugby due to injury.
After playing for Moseley and Worcester Warriors, Blaze joined Tigers in the summer of 2007 and made his debut in a victory at Bristol on the opening day of the 2007/08 season.
An England age-group international at Under-19 and Under-21 level, he joined the England Saxons squad in 2007, playing in the victorious Churchill Cup campaign.
Blaze ended his first season at Welford Road with an appearance in the 2008 Guinness Premiership Final and won a second Churchill Cup with the Saxons that summer.
A stress fracture of the foot counted him out of much of the 2008/09 season but Blaze returned for the start of 2009/10, training with the senior England squad ahead of the autumn internationals before the injury struck again.
He made his final playing appearance for Tigers at London Irish in October 2009.
Blaze said: "It's a massively disappointing moment when you get to the stage where you have to say you cannot play again. I've enjoyed my rugby through schools and age-groups, then into the professional game and I was really looking to push on when I came to Leicester.
"I've worked hard to come back from the injury but in the end I've been advised that the stress fracture is not going to stand up to the demands of a full-time career and reluctantly announced my retirement.
"I love the game of rugby and I'd like to thank the medical staff and the strength and conditioning staff, especially Julie Hayton and Andy Shelton, for their help at Leicester and for their great support. But now I will have to move on and make decisions about my future.
"I wish everyone at Tigers all the best for the rest of the season and hope they can enjoy some success."
Tigers director of rugby Richard Cockerill said: "It's extremely disappointing when a player has to retire prematurely, especially so young. We signed Richard because he was a young player we could see developing well within our environment and he made a good impression here on and off the field.
"It is a great pity that injuries stood in his way and we all feel for him now that he is unable to continue. He is a big loss to Leicester Tigers and also to England as he has been brought through the international ranks from the age-groups to the verge of the senior squad.
"On behalf of everyone at Leicester Tigers, I'd like to wish him well for the future."

Your first time in the cat stand as well, i think you will like it and as i`m stood on the terraces for today i will get to hear what the cat stand sounds like from the other side
Posted on: 23 October 2010 by JWM
No, we were in there once last season before the Cat had found its voice. Such a big space, I think people felt self-conscious! But by Sarries match at the end of the season the Cat was making a noise we could hear from the Club House.
Our youngest is really excited about going into the Cat - ah, the attraction of the shiny and new... Personally, I'd rather be on your side standing on the Crumbie Terrace, but the young don't seem to be able to stand up for more than two minutes before having to lean on something/complaining. Think 'Kevin and Perry'...

Should you not be on the road now

Not just any old plastic bag, this is a Marks & Spencer plastic bag...
It's the last time I sacrificially give my coat to my son, he should be old enough to remember now...
The water on the lens gives an idea of just HOW wet it was yesterday. We could barely see across the width of the pitch at times. Roundyball wendies would have gone in in case their perms got spoilt.
(Thanks to DL for emailing the pic back to me.)
