The Ashes 2010/11 'down under'
Posted by: JamieL_v2 on 18 November 2010
I thought I would get a thread going for what promises to be an very interesting series in Australia over the next few months.
Great to see Monty Panasar in the England side against Australia A in the last of the warm up matches, taking a one handed catch no less.
Australia don't seem to be hitting their stride, although Steve Smith might well fins a stage to blossom on. I still think he looks like the character on the right of Steely Dan's 'Countdown to Ecstasy'
Really looking forward to this series.

Aw, she'll be right! We'll beat the Aussies and then eat all the prawns off their barbies and drink all their tinnies too!
No problem, mate!

It's gonna be a close one this! The Aussies are fighting hard to stay in it, but England should close this out with 400 runs on day four and then bowling the Aussies out for 150 on day five.
Good to see the Aussies making a competition of it, though!

Not a bad days play for the Aussies!!! Well done boys. All the more better running through my Naim system

Just two days of steady batting, and we can call it a draw. So hoping for a couple of "non bugger" days.
So far:
Day 1 - bugger
Day 2 - non bugger
Day 3 - bugger

Sorry, only just finished watching it, I left the Sky box recording it last night as the 1 hour highlights are too short.
Day 4 - definite non bugger.
Tonight might be a hard choice what to record, my two favourite sports on at the same time through the night. The Ashes on Sky1, and NFL American Football (San Diego @ Indianapolis) on Channel 4.

That's easy. Cricket is God's own game and American NFL is for girls. Man up, if you are around Headingly those blokes don't wear girlie helmets.
Even if it isn't real rugby.

You must have missed the Michael Holding interview on the Sky NFL tonight talking about how much of a NFL fan he is. The two most tactical sports there are, cricket and NFL.
If rugby were played at the speed of American football, or had legal off the ball tacking/hits, then helmets would be needed.
Really can't be bothered with Rugby, either sort, although Union was my game, good games, but not for me. Soccer is just a joke.
Cricket and NFL have the highest combination of intelligence and physical ability, and for me there is nothing to choose between them.
Tempted to watch or record the NFL tonight and watch the highlights of the ashes tomorrow as it is unlikely to be anything other than a draw.

Ah well, I'd take rugby union every day. In NFL nothing happens for far too much time, not my thing at all. I find all the breaks and US pom pom stuff too embarrassing for words. I am appalled at how much of that 'fluff' creeps in elsewhere, but hey.
As for Mike, he also likes basketball - 'nuff said.
Another export of the US that is slowly condemning the West Indies to cricketing oblivion. Not the quality of the game, it is netball after all, but the cash involved.

Like cricket, the 'nothing time' is where the coaches (as opposed to captains) review the last play and plan the next. The TV replays show how players not with the ball influence the play (blocking, or defending) which may not have been apparent on first view.
Until you know the tactics it is very dead time, and unless you have someone to talk you through it, or have grown up with it, it is time that is wasted.
Very like watching a captain change a field to set a trap for a batsman. As you know more about the game, seeing the tactics planned and then implemented fill the time so that the game becomes a complete event.
I do agree the pom poms, and especially the mascots are a pain. Not a fan of cheerleaders either.
All that said, I do like the description of American Football as 'A game of rugby between two teams of motorcycle couriers' (Giles in Buffy I think), although I have also been known to call it 'chess with violence'.
Sad to hear that baseball is starting to take young talent away from cricket in the West Indies, but I do think that T20 Cricket has revitalized the game, especially in the sub continent.
I didn't know Mr. Holding likes basketball though, I just can't get on with that at all. Too squeaky with those shoes on the boards, and too much ego from the players.
I am going to watch the first hour of the Ashes tonight, before the late NFL game, and then catch up tomorrow.

No it's basketball doing the damage there. Or rather the money and wall to wall US TV coverage associated with it. You may be right about 20-20 if we can stop the corruption.
Don't start me on baseball. World series my arse, nobody else in the world plays it (other than rounders in girls schools) or gives a monkeys. I suppose if you have no chance of being world champions at team sports that the world plays - you have to create one and be the only team in it.
As for Sir Alastair Cook's batting - never in doubt.

Nice to see some great batting from the England top order. No surprise about the result.
There are a few other countries that play baseball, and have beaten the US in the Olympics, Japan and Cuba are just as strong as the US at that sport, and I am pretty sure they played the final of one Olympics.
Americans really do not get team sports at international level, and in the past teams have refused to release players for international events, I am mostly thinking of Ice Hockey. Still I doubt they will ever have any influence on cricket.
I did hear a report on the news a couple of weeks ago that China have a national cricket team, and are aiming for test status within ten years. That could be interesting.
Still nothing beats the Ashes.
I did think that this series could possibly have another name 'Tashes'.
Obviously it will be called that in Yorkshire anyway.

If Mitchell Johnson is going to shave when he next gets a wicket he may end up looking like WG Grace.
