The Ashes 2010/11 'down under'

Posted by: JamieL_v2 on 18 November 2010

I thought I would get a thread going for what promises to be an very interesting series in Australia over the next few months.

Great to see Monty Panasar in the England side against Australia A in the last of the warm up matches, taking a one handed catch no less.

Australia don't seem to be hitting their stride, although Steve Smith might well fins a stage to blossom on. I still think he looks like the character on the right of Steely Dan's 'Countdown to Ecstasy'

Really looking forward to this series.

Any bets on a skip change ??

Must be the pressure. Fancy taking on the guy with the technology. The benefit of any doubt must go with the batsman anyway.

I have huge respect for Ponting, he's a great player. The reduction in quality of players available to him must be hard to take, having been part of such a great side. He over-stepped the mark but unless he abused anyone, I'd be inclined to leave it at a fine.

I respect Ponting as a player, but not as a captain, either technically or in the spirit of the game. It is not easy to be part of a side that has been to the peaks but is now mortal, and with your own form sliding too but I find reports of his behaviour all too predictable. Ditto after the infamous Gary Pratt run-out.

The video umpire system seems to me to be slowly maturing in this series. Does not seem to stop Ponting from tearing up apparently. What was he asking for; a decision by popular vote?

Oz: 98 & 169-6 (close of play)
England: 513

Looks like an early finish tomorrow.
All day to celebrate - BARMY ARMY - BARMY ARMY

To be far it looks like the Ozzies have got the act together with no "moments"
Ricky got bowled for 20 & walked without looking around - proper job
Hussey got a duck - not a nice way to finish off an outstanding batting performance, but hey, thats how it crumbles
Apart from that the others did OK - double digit scores at least

Swann looks like the pitch was made for him. He is using the rough well with some turning what look like 20 degrees. Last few overs had the entire team in short catching positions.
No pressure then

Well well Rick, gonna refer that?

Ah, that explains a lot. He's managed to disguise it well during the tests though!

"Punter" has always been a cheating little slug. I can't wait to see the back of him. Not that I ever watch any of this garbage anyway. Although I did delight in the news that their sponsor is likely to abandon them. Why should I pay Punter et. al. via my 'phone bill anyhow? I have no idea where this idiot idea comes from. Let the sport (all sports) get back to what all sports should be - competition for its own sake - compete for the joy - no money, no professionals and no bullshit. If you want to watch it, pay for a f^&%ing ticket. Don't ask me to shell out everytime I buy a sponsor's product.

13,000 there today, 12,999 of them English, including a goodly number of Queens.

Well played England.

Wha-hey, or even non-bugger. Brilliant win, best over the Aussies since 1957 I think, someone ask Benedict.

If there was a firing squad execution of the team I'd turn up, front row seats.

Biggest win against Aus, in Aus, for 56 years!

Now we just have to complete the job with a series win in Sydney Cool

What the team needs is a workman-like attitude to maintaining the pressure, and also the British news media needs to reflect a similar point of view. No reason to tempt Fate by celebrating too soon ...

Ponting is out for the next match, due to his broken pinky. He of course grabbed the third doctor he saw by the throat and argued about the decision but had to accept it on appeal.

England should be congratulated for being thoroughly professional on this tour to date. Playing as a unit, finding form in warm up matches, keeping away from the hype (and the backlash after Perth) and playing good cricket that has translated well to Australian conditions. They have applied pressure with bat and ball rather than produced sporadic magic moments.

Australia are a mixed bag, their better players and potential matchwinners are mostly out of touch and low on confidence. In form they would get a few players into a 'team of the series', currently it would be hard to pick more than Hussey. I detect a lack of Test Match mentality too, batsmen battling to 30 or 50 but not going on, bowlers struggling to control scoring over a sustained spell.

You have to question not just the team leadership but the selectors and especially the coaches. How could Australia have a bowler as potentially dangerous as Johnson who openly says he has 'no idea' why it sometimes comes out right and sometimes does not?

I am afraid the cupboard is bare as far as quality world class crickers go in Australia at the moment. England have played well - no doubt about that. But they have really got us at the lowest point since the mid 80's in regards to talent available goes.

We invented the "Cricket Academy " concept - where the hell did we go so wrong as to not have nutured kids into great cricketers ?

The administraters have a lot to answer for IMHO.

What is wrong with England? the Aussies are still batting at the end of the first day!

It's got the potential to be a very exciting end!

As Geoff Boycott said, "Finely balanced ..."

Yes finely balanced
Shame the dingo kept wagging its tail tho', thats not good, very demoralising.
Lets hope the England tail wags, but only to get the plus bit on top of the 350/400 the middle order get.
Posted on: 04 January 2011 by Bruce Woodhouse
Not so finely balanced now then!

Maybe, just maybe, Ian Bell (The Great Deceiver is my nickname for him) has actually played an important innings at a time of consequence for England. Might have been sticky if he and Cook had not gone on together. Now it is looking in the bag for a win or draw.

A good day at the office
Need to press on tomorrow & make the most of the conditions.
D-4 forecast is part cloudy with possible showers.
This might give Oz some chances with early morning swing & they could get England out early & cheaply.
But England might get the better bowling conditions in the afternoon as the showers with humidity are due pm.
Pitch should also start to rough up & that will give Swann a chance
D-5 is cloudy with showers
Provided England don't have too much to do to knock off the runs, might be early drinks
