DVD5 harsh sounding cd play?

Posted by: CmpMeridian on 30 January 2009

Anyone no about the DVD5. This thing is built like a tank and I love the video but he sound is very harsh on CD playback. I have to set my preamp to -15 on the treble. I am using a Meridian 568 and DSP 3100 speakers.

what interconnect i.e. I assume analogue output from the DVD5?

The Meridian 568 has no true analogue input, it digitises (24bit) all analogue inputs. So if you are using Analogue outputs you are going through two un-necssary stages.

In a Meridian system (especially with DSP speakers) you are better leaving everything in the digital domain.

You could try taking the 568 out of the circuit, by setting the DVD5 to 2 channel PCM and feeding directly into your master speaker. That would at least prove if the 568 is at fault.

I went direct and it sound better. Anybody have an opinion on the quality of meridian DSP Speakers versus separate amps and speakers?

yes dump them and get some Naim

Meridian and Naim kit produce different presentations of the music, IMO they are equally detailed, but they emphasis different things. Only your ears can tell you which you prefer.

The 568 is older technology than the DSP3100s, so I'm not completely surprised that it soundedbetter direct.

My DVD5, albeit unfortunate and in need of assistance (great support from Naim HQ, thanks again Steven), sounded full, warm and very friendly with the very few CDs I managed to play.
Backed by AV2 and Nap 200.
