This has hardly been out of the player since it arrived the other day.
Lloyd Cole and the Commotions - Rattlesnakes. Fabulous album, IMO.

In the midst of the Haitink ring, a brief detour to Levine's end of Act III. Musically, Haitink just about has the upper hand: he manages to hold the tension just a bit better, and that impacts the singers' performances: both Marton and Morris are a shade more involved for Haitink than Behrens and - again - Morris. But DG score huge points with the sound quality - their close miking may be unrealistic but sounds gorgeous.
The Gramophone did an interview with James Morris at the time of these Rings, which were recorded at roughly the same time. He doesn't say outright, but you get the feeling he favored working with Jimmy Levine on these works (he did live, many times, of course). True or not, it certainly did not impact his performance for Haitink. Morris is the true star of both these ring cycles.

I agree. It is a while since I listened to it, but whenever I pull it out it gets played again and again. Still sounds as refreshing as it did when I first bought it, in fact probably more so, like a good wine.

top of the pile:
Freddie Hubbard "Sweet Return"

only seems right, after the previous two albums, with the wonderful Joanne Brakeen on piano and Roy Haynes on drums.
