"Oberto, conte di San Bonifacio" was Verdi's first opera, an early work. Verdi's signature is already apparent, parts of the opera are clearly foreshadowing Nabucco and Ernani. Most of Verdi's later operas are vastly more accomplished, but by comparison to most works by Donizetti and Rossini, this is already very good. The performance is excellent: Sam Ramey is his usual excellent self, and Stuart Neill hasn't made many recordings and it is good to have him here. Maria Guleghina and Violeta Urmana are both suitably cast and have an easy time with their not-very-taxing music. Marriner does what he can with the music, downplaying the occasional hum-pa-pa.

Cheers,

EJ

This morning: Fabio Biondi's recording of Vivaldi's Four Seasons - before this year's new recording by Midori Seiler probably the wildest on the market.

This evening: continuing the Haitink Ring with Siegfried, disc 1.

I agree.  It is a while since I listened to it, but whenever I pull it out it gets played again and again.  Still sounds as refreshing as it did when I first bought it, in fact probably more so, like a good wine

Couldn't agree more great album even better on the Black Stuff!

Hello Gary,

I'm waiting for an original 1984 copy on vinyl to arrive. I had a feeling the long player might be better than the silver coaster.

Silver coaster for me, but thought I would dig it out tonight for a spin.  Looks like I am not the only one.
