Verdi's Don Carlos in the Five-act Modena version, and sung in French. This is on the whole the most satisfactory edition of the opera, and the only studio recording of it. The recording is not popular, but seems to have a dedicated following (me included). Domingo does a sterling job, the rest of the cast is very good, too, although all could have worked on their pronunciation of the language. Abbado keeps things moving, and on the whole creates far more tension and unity than Giulini or Solti did in their acclaimed recordings.

The one real blemish is the recording, which is reverberant. Not sufficiently to annoy, but anyone not knowing the text could believe the whole thing took place in a church. I've listened to this recording regularly for the past 20 years, and it never fails to move me.
