Dame Myra Hess playing Schubert's last piano sonata, D. 960, live.  Also, Juana Zayas doing the same on a lovely Music and Art pressing.

Superbly cynical sounds like something I would like.  Something for me to investigate Jan-Erik.  Thanks.

Hi Jeff,

It was a local speaker designer who turned me on to this album in 2003 at the Montreal HiFi show. He played me track 4 "Le Penitencier" (the Inmate) and I bought the speakers on the spot.

It's not all cynical, he does have his moments of lightness. Hope you enjoy it.

Alexandre Tharaud's brilliant take on Scarlatti may surprise his followers: he's not the first pianist to exploit the possibilities offered by a modern grand in this music, but I've not often heard Scarlatti played with such forceful projection and dynamic range. The close recording helps - Virgin is giving him a different sound than HM did (or is it another instrument), but the result is high class.

Thanks for that EJ.  This is on my wish list and will be ordered soon.
My guess is that what you refer to is a "label" sound.  I'm having a listen to Anderszewski at the moment and I would bet that the characteristics you talk of are going to be very similar and very typically Virgin.

I am downloading this now at iTunes, it will probably be the weekend before I have much chance to listen to it.  I will follow-up with you then.  Thanks again for the recommendation.

The new Buddy Miller album feat everyone from Emmylou Harris to Shawn Colvin. I quite like the album as it is him showing more of this country side but for me not amongst his best. Though with repeated listenings it might grow on me.

Loving it. Recorded in an old Pasta Factory. They wanted to experiment with recording techniques. Great atmospheric sound to it and great album. There is also a limited Deluxe edition with extra trax that were recorded in an old reptile breeeders garage.
