Martin Galling's 1964 recording of WTC (Book 1 & 2.)

[ADD] very nicely digital mastered to 24bit 96kHz

A style of play that is confident and affording an enjoyable level of emotional charm.

Highly Recommended

Rumor has it that this 1992 recording has been one of DG's most expensive commercial duds. A shame because this is a good studio recording of an opera that needed one - the other one with Sutherland and Horne is marred by disastrous cuts that make the story incomprehensible, and a very weak tenor. Of course, nobody could equal Sutherland in Rossini, but Studer is still impressive, and good enough to allow preference to be based on which voice is preferred. Only relative newcomer (he had just completed a four year run as resident conductor at the Vienna State Opera) Ion Marin as conductor is a bit of a disappointment - he's a bit laid back and prone to let the music go its way. If only DG would have thought of and contracted Muti.

Cheers,
EJ

On Spotify, OK, competent,  but not needed if you have any Emmy Lou or Allison Kraus IMO.
