Arrau's 1973 Amsterdam (studio) recording of the Preludes. A grand performance, very different from how these works are played nowadays. The recording gained a lot in this remastering.

Cheers,

Band of Horses - Cease to Begin

Listening to Uchida's rendering of the Schumann Fantasie. There is an undercurrent of longing and uncertainty in this music especially in the first movement, which few pianists really manage to bring out. Maurizio Pollini and Murray Perahia are good; Mikhail Pletnev is amazing. Uchida underplays this emotion to a certain extent, but in its place is some beautiful soft yet full-bodied playing and a velvet sound which only Uchida seems capable of. Wonderfully recorded sound.

Cheers,

EJ

Arrived in the post this morning on lovely black vinyl.

First listen tonight.  Unfortunately I couldn't give it the attention it deserved as Miss S came in and demanded that I teach her how to play Mastermind (the 70's game with the coloured pegs) , fairly appropriate really as it involves logic.

On her first turn she got it correct in one guess - beginners luck!

EJ,

The LP sounds very good as well. I should play it more often.

 Hi EJ,
I have the 7 CD Chopin set on Philips (compilation 2001).  Preludes recorded in 1973 too.

Do we have the same thing (ie. remastered)?
Thanks,
Doug

Doug, could be but am not sure as the booklet is not clear on when the remastering was done. My comparison are the 80s / early 90s CDs. That is a beautiful box set, by the way!
