This album wasn't as instant for me as their first, but it's a real grower. Chris Stapleton's voice is wonderful.

Lovely story about Sammons, who gave the Elgar Violin Concerto more times unders the composer's baton than any other violinist has given it in total. He was a firm friend of the great English pianist "Solomom" Cutner, and in the 1930s they were at the Queens Hall [in Langham Place, next to Broadcasting House, but destroyed by the bombing of 1942, and now a simple office/appartment block] attending a Heifetz concert in high mid-summer. It was very warm and Albert said to Solomon, "It's bloody hot in here!"

Solomon replied: "It's bloody hot in here for violinists!"

ATB from George

PS: Certainly Sammons was Heifetz' equal technically, and aurguably greater, and musically there is no comparison. Heifetz was a cold dog next to Sammons' warmth and musical communicative capacity. Sammons was possibly the greatest virtuoso violinsist to have made records, but he was not recognised outside the cogniscenty, simply because no English musician could be recognised beside a Russian or German in those days because fashion dictated that "England was the land without music," on account of some minor German musician having made this fatuous observation during the 19th. century!

Earlier:

I have to confess I'm somewhat disappointed by the record. The track
"Copenhagen" is up there with her top material from other records, but
otherwise this one is a letdown.

Now:

Good record! (But for some reason, the cover really bothers me.)

How long since I've listened to this? Longer than a decade, for certain.

So strange to hear this record from my mid-twenties once again with forty-year-old ears....
