Giovanni Girolamo Kapsberger (c.1580-1651)

Playing cd disc 1  ~ The Art of the Lute

Il Tedesco della Tiorba ~ Lute Works

Paul O'Dette lute & chitarrone (theorbo)

10-course lute by Ray Nurse Vancouver 1984 after Hans Frei
chitarrone by Richard Fletcher 1984 after Vendelio Venere

Recorded november 1989 at Bethel United Church of Christ, Manchester, Michigan, USA

harmonia mundi 5 x cd box-set © 2009

Some of Paul O’Dette’s lute works can be listened to via Spotify - hence my recent purchase of this 5 cd set, very neatly presented in a cardboard pack which incidentally i by far prefer over any design of plastic jewel case.

The recording quality (so far on disc 1) is excellent, and the splendidly relaxed finger work giving a very mellow but satisfying performance.

Much of these lute works on these 5 cd’s are not well known but Paul O’Dette also contributes to the accompanying booklet writing some very interesting historical detail about the composers.

Presently available via Amazon (other sellers) for just a few £’s so this set is imo another harmonia mundi bargain! : )

Hi Debs,

This is a very recent purchase & I'm probably not familiar enough with the two discs to be categoric. Listening to the first CD tonight (Symphonies 29, 31 & 32) I would say that so far No.31 "Paris" takes some beating.

The whole classical genre is new to me & all of my purchases to date have been as a result of joining this forum. I love the grandeur of Symphonies & Dvorak, Mendelssohn & Mozart have written the ones that are my faves so far.

I always look with interest at the posts on this thread that relate to classical music & would like to thank yourself, EJ, Haim & Florestan (I know I've probably missed some other very important forumites, so apologies)

It's a bloody exciting journey.

Cheers

Hi Flettster,

At some point, you have to try a Bruckner symphony (pref. 5 or 8) and tell me what you think. Not the easiest to 'get' but so addictive! Good recording quality is a must.

Ooh, that just arrived in the post today, Debs - look forward to hearing it after your positive review. Did you get the Andrew Manze set too? 5 CDs in the same format for about a fiver.
