Blackfield - Welcome To My DNA

DenisA,

Did you get this one?

George.

First listen.

Mozart's beautiful but rather superficial serenades too often sound undernourished in modern performances, or suffer from soft focus chocolate box playing. Collins and his band project strongly and with pointed articulation, and benefit from a great recording - exactly what music needs.

Cheers,

EJ

There is more to German music than Kraftwerk.

Yes thanks George - 0378/2000 on vinyl. Just one play so far and reckon I need a few listens to judge properly.

From the above ep, here's an MDMA-fuelled Lone remix of a track from the album. Nice 808:

Bonus point to any savage dragons who can name the film in the above clip.

Dowland: In Darkness Let Me Dwell.  Some much needed early morning listening and an album which perfectly reflects my sentiments of the week just over.

Grace Francis (Piano) - Quartz Records:

Variations (28) for Piano on a theme by Paganini, Op. 35 by Johannes Brahms

Sonata for Piano no 1 in C major, Op. 1 by Johannes Brahms

Harmonies poétiques et réligieuses, S 173: no 7, Funérailles by Franz Liszt

Ave Maria for Piano in D major, S 504/1 by Franz Liszt

Années de pèlerinage, deuxième année, S 161 "Italie": no 5, Sonetto 104 del Petrarca by Franz Liszt

Venezia e Napoli, S 162: no 3, Tarantella by Franz Liszt

Another stellar debut album from a young pianist of exceptional talent.  This is mostly serious romantic period music and this is precisely why it appeals to me.  It seems to me that record companies usually dictate that artists record only "sellable" or "top 40" material and this mentality of the marketer is what ruins classical music as well as any type of music.  These smaller labels do a good job of offering some alternatives.

Grace Francis strikes me as someone who plays music because she loves music and especially romantic music.  I hope I can hear more from her in the future.

My 1st listen

Posted on: 26 March 2011 by nicnaim

The Stray Cats.

Just picked up a lovely second hand copy of this.  Takes me right back to one of the best live gigs I ever went to for sheer energy and excitement, at the Rainbow.  At the time they had only just released their first single.  Made a hell of a noise for a trio, with possibly the most basic drum kit I have ever seen.

Regards

Nic
