My own history with this work started with Ashkenazy's recording.

I haven't heard any of Nikolaeva's recordings, but I can vouch for Alexander Melnikov's recent recording for Harmonia Mundi. I think he gets somewhat deeper into the music than Askenazy, fine though that recording is - especially on the long, ruminative fugues that intersperse the second half of the set.

Listened today to the new recording of the Rach 2 by Yuja Wang on DG, in the store. I liked it but it is a small scale performance, not sure whether this music supports such an approach.

Now at home, with Ashkenazy's recordings with the KCO and Haitink. These are by far my favorite performances on disc.

Cheers,

EJ

Old 80's CD pressing, but no complaints about the sound.

Besides, who'd expect good sound on a 'mats album?

The Netherlands Bach Society have just released a new recording of the St. Matthew Passion, recorded last year in Naarden. This is their earlier one from 1997.

Cheers,

Earlier, Blue Nile (single cd) & Blackfield...

Note: Blue Nile's i love this life/the second act were A/B sides for their RSO funded release before the band signed for Linn. About 2 months after the release RSO went bust!
