... so did this one but don't feel like listen to it right now.
First play on disc 1 (of 3 x CD box-set)
After a few minutes of the first track acclimatising to the feel of acoustic reverberation the music begins to slowly draw me in.
The accompanying booklet is an interesting history lesson, wish I had more time to sit down, relax, and absorb this properly instead of while getting ready to go out to work.
Debs
Hi Debs,
I just placed an order for this a couple of days ago so I can't wait to compare it to the earlier Melodyia version! I couldn't spot any golfers here but I could be very wrong about this. What do you think? In any case, there definately is a sports theme happening - either speed skating or sprinting or relay - although I can't quite make out where the baton is? Maybe even horse jumping with human obstacles although this one doesn't look very challenging?

It's IRON AND WINE's latest album (and it's quite good too).

Oh boy, was I wrong. Never really cared for this album, but Steve's mastering is absolutely outstanding. This will get a lot of playtime over the next few weeks.

Forgotten what a great album this is, as is the RT one too!

Debs
Debs, would be interested in your views (on the music and performance, I'll leave it to you and Doug to discuss the cover art). Nikolayeva recorded this music three times and was supposedly Shostakovich' favorite interpreter (note: contrary to popular belief, these works were not dedicated to her). But by the time this recording was made, her street cred as performance artist had diminished a bit...
Cheers,
EJ

Purchased the new St. Matthew Passion this morning and listening to it now. All the brouhaha about the separation of first and second choirs aside, which to be honest doesn't make a huge difference to the experience, this is (so far) a very, very good performance. Van Veldhoven's speeds are unremarkable, but he has a light touch and almost relaxed attitude married to an acute sense of timing and momentum. In terms of overall impression, he is closest to Herreweghe and himself in 1997, but more intimate than either. Thankfully, Van Veldhoven uses full orchestra and choirs.
The soloists are less well known but very good, and like last time, Gerd Türk is an excellent narrator. (I heard him in Naarden a couple of years ago, in a performance of the Bach Society conducted by Richard Egarr - while that was an enjoyable performance, Egarr introduced some ideas that have luckily been abandoned again in the current recording). The (SACD hybrid) recording is live but you wouldn't know it if it wasn't mentioned. The presentation with hard cardboard case and bound full-colour booklet is beyond excellent.
Unless there's a screw-up in the end, I happily recommend this recording as essential listening for all Bach admirers.
Cheers,
EJ

Haim: Epigraphs is a lovely companion to The River.
Yes, it is. Ketil Bjornstad just came out with a new duo disc on ECM:

Haim
Haim,
The Haden and Jones is so easy without being trite; it's a hard line to walk but they nail it. Thanks for the tip on the new Bjornstadt disk. With that cover, how I could I not order a copy?
Best,
Carl
