Another great recent recording of two Mozart piano concertos. The Orpheus (good to have them on a record again) is on the small side for these concertos, but they do some excellent work. But this is Jonathan Biss' show and he delivers the goods without doubt.
Cheers,
EJ

Plenty of recordings of the 1-disc opera Pagliacci to choose from. This one is my favorite: Muti is slow (in 'come scritto' mood) but extracts a ton of beauty from this score, and Pavarotti and Dessi are well matched and give their all in this superbly engineered 1992 live recording (no applause). Despite his fame for the aria 'Vesti la giubba' and complete recording with Freni and Patane, this was Pav's first stage appearance as Canio - and he shows remarkable insight in the role. He is just fantastic.
I read the Gramophone review of this recording on their website earlier today, and was surprised to find that they had utterly slammed it, with a borderline rude tone to boot. Must have been the backlash from the Three Tenors hysteria. I would not sleep well now if I had written that!

With all due respect to Fischer-Dieskau, Goerne, Padmore and other greats who have sung Dichterliebe: what Keenlyside does with this cycle, and particularly the final song, is unbelievable.

If I hit the Click Here To Watch! link, it plays the video on my RealPlayer which I have installed.
The Sound Quality on the Listen button is very good as well.

Just arrived today. I understand that it was recorded on tape, mixed with minimal use of computers and it's sounding excellent on vinyl.

Not that familiar with Mahler's 7th Symphony so its time to rectify that.

Saving the best for last today: the new recording of Haydn's Op.33 quartets by the Borodin Quartet. The Borodin sound magnificent: great tone, PRAT, super concentration (not many groups manage to keep the tension as these gentlemen do), going along with all Haydn's mood shifts (except maybe the last ounce of vulnerability), and some of the almost old fashioned fun that seems to be missing from many of the newer quartets.

I am finishing the day off to this on the iPad and etymotics. I always love the FooFighters. Look forward to a sunny day driving the country lanes to this LOUD.

My first listen to the 2009 remastered version; obviously this
record really needed it, and the improvement is huge.

A few more thoughts posted to the 80s pop thread.
