Easter is nearing and one disc per day for the next five days from this one to go along with Suzuki, Rilling, Gardiner, and Herreweghe.
How is it, Doug? My copy will arrive in a week or so!

EJ, only had one listen but I was very moved by this disc. Of course, Hamelin, as usual, just makes child's play out of this material and any technical challenges but this is mature Liszt playing and very highly recommended.
The Sonata is obviously the focal point of this CD but I applaud the choice of the opening pieces selected as well. Fantasia and Fugue for Piano on B-A-C-H, S 529, Harmonies poétiques et réligieuses, S 173: no 3, Bénédiction de Dieu dans la solitude, and Venezia e Napoli, S 162 provide a good cross-section of musical ideas.
With the Bénédiction de Dieu dans la solitude being one of my favourite pieces (and I actually do like Liszt's entire output from beginning to end) the only sad thing is that since he recorded it alone we won't actually see a recording of Harmonies poétiques et réligieuses complete from Hamelin, at least in the near future. I hope Hamelin would record more Liszt; much more!
It is unfortunate that many people fall for that erroneous misconception that Liszt was not a composer of serious stature. Liszt is as important to music and equals the importance of those before him and certainly those after him owe a lot to his pioneering efforts.

Doug
Settling down after a trying week and putting things back into perspective. Thanks Haim...

Hi Doug,
Your feedback is appreciated as ever. No need to convince me on Liszt's stature, although I think all those transcriptions are more suited to the concert hall than the CD player.
Cheers,
EJ
Well, do I have a choice but play it?
