An entertaining Don Giovanni, a studio recording based on live performances with the same cast. Abbado gives Simon Keenlyside and Bryn Terfel plenty of room to ham it up as the Don and Leporello, but on the whole this performance lacks the focus or consistency of, say, Jacobs or Haitink.

Manon is Massenet's best known opera after Werther and close in musical style although where Werther is mostly a hot-blooded affair, Manon is all elegance and slapping the handkerchief. Conductor and singers do a good job on this recording but this is Gheorghiu's show - her 'Notre petite table' is the most touching on record.

As we were chatting about this earlier, on another thread. On CD, 10 tracks with a Decca/Deram label saying it has been digitally re-mastered with extra tracks  :-

I now remember why I don't rate these guys so high, great music, childish words. They should have been an instrumental band.

Don't bother with pages of lyrics please.
