At 88, Claudio Arrau still had a formidable Beethoven in him. For once, I fully agree with The Gramophone's review (July 1995):

 

 

"There is something truly poignant about a great artist who after defying the ageing process for so tong finds himself ineluctably in the autumn of life. Yet while it would be idle to pretend that these performances in the fifth volume of "The Final Sessions" are polished rather than gnarled, it is surely significant that the ear is so often drawn to greatness rather than deficiency. "
