Disc 2. By the end of the opera, Puccini has his heroine dying of thirst in the desert - her Sola, Perduta, Abbadonata flowing into a tender duet is one of the most implausible yet dramatic endings of opera ever. Freni sings it gorgeously, better than for Sinopoli even though her voice has dried somewhat. Pavarotti also does a grand job, and you'd never guess that both singers were 58 at the time of recording. Slight blemish is Pav's crying at the end - he should have stuck to the idea that it is the audience that should cry, not the performers.

Manon Lescaut has done very well on records, but there is room for more. I hope Angela Gheorghiu gets the chance to record it before it's too late. Manon's arias are the highlight of her Puccini disc.

Cheers,

EJ

This one is a studio sound disc (no live audience noises).

Slow, relaxed, wonderfully arranged, and recorded, this is an ordinary CD copy and sounds just perfect.

Includes some fabulous cover versions, although i hasten to add she's not just a cover singer,

every track is a pleasure : )

Chailly's accomplishments in Bruckner and Mahler are of variable quality, but the good parts are seriously good. This Mahler 5th is certainly one of the best things he has done in Amsterdam together with Mahler 1 and 2, and Bruckner 6, 8 and 9 (IMO).

Cheers,
