Second time this week. This is a strange recording of Butterfly, almost symphonic in approach - for years I only knew the opera from this recording and never fully appreciated its potential dramatic impact. Now, having heard and seen many recordings and performances, I think this is one of the few best editions available. It is Sinopoli's show, but his singers are pretty good - Carreras in one his latter appearances is loud but in good voice, but by this time some of the magic had left him (*). For Freni, Butterfly never was a natural choice but she copes well with a subtle and carefully balanced portrayal of the difficult role. Juan Pons and Teresa Berganza provide excellent support.
In addition to this one, I also recommend the recordings under Maazel (Scotto's second), Leinsdorf (you have to appreciate Leontyne Price's many times larger than life and exaggerated Cio-Cio San, though), and Pappano (with a fantastic Gheorghiu).
Cheers,
EJ
