Cheryl Studer's recording career came and went in a few years (roughly, 1989-1993) but in that short time she recorded a relatively huge number of complete operas and recital discs, in every operatic style from Mozart to Wagner, for Philips, EMI and DG. She had (has) a unique, instantly recognisable voice, particularly suited to Wagner and Strauss.

She is not a natural Gilda, but some squeaked high notes aside, she copes well and presents a believable portrait of the girl. Her scenes with Chernov's Rigoletto are the high points of this set. Chernov has a lovely voice and would be a perfect Rigoletto if he would be a bit more consistent - his good moments are breathtaking. For Pavarotti, this was his third official studio recording, and although he sounds drier than in his prime, he is still very good. Supporting cast is as good as the Met could assemble early nineties, and James Levine conducts masterly.

Cheers,

EJ

Todd Rundgren - A Wizard a True Star     Totally Mad But Brilliant At The Same Time

Posted on: 23 May 2011 by Guido Fawkes

Not great SQ, but out-takes from Ars Longa Vita Brevis by Sir Keith Emerson and the Nice including an interesting version of Frank Zappa's Lumpy Gravy which the Nice condense in to a couple of minutes and tracks like I'm one of those people that my father tells my sister not to go out with. For Nice fans only - unless you have all the basic albums including Ars Longa Vita Brevis  then this is best left - interesting, but not essential.

hi floid,

Todd is still going strong and making ends meet...

See Episode 40: Todd Rundgren of Live From Daryls House http://www.livefromdarylshouse.com/archive.html

Daryl Hall takes the 40th and latest webisode of Live From Daryl’s House to Kauai, Hawaii, where he and old Philly pal Todd Rundgren join together live from Todd’s house for a rousing seven-song set that includes Daryl Hall and John Oates’ “Beanie G and the Rose Tattoo” and a cover of the Delfonics’ 1970 hit, “Didn’t I Blow Your Mind This Time.”

Two fabulous musicians who should tour together as D&T. Check out Episode 23 to see why at Daryl's House http://www.livefromdarylshouse...rentep.html?ep_id=22
