Votto's Traviata, with a very young Renata Scotto, has long been one of the few go-to recordings of choice if Callas isn't your cup of tea. I've known this version since I was a kid, as my parents' recording of choice. In my view, it is only bettered by Scotto's later recording with Muti. Comparing the two, Scotto was in better voice here, the perfect Traviata. But Muti keeps a tighter reign on the proceedings than Votto with spectacular results, and Alfredo Kraus, while an acquired taste, is so much more involving than the dull Gianni Raimondi. The fact that this recordings includes all the traditional cuts, doesn't really bother me (Muti is complete). The Votto recording, from the 60s, sounds good but cloudy compared to the best from the era.
Cheers,
EJ
