Bloody great album. Roots reggae at it's finest. Makes me think about buying all the other releases.

Cheers

Haim, what do you think of this performance? I don't have this first effort, but Pollini's remake (also with Abbado) is rather magnificent.

On of the best live double black stuffs out their IMO.

There are not many operas that sustain such dramatically different interpretations as Mozart's Don Giovanni. Mozart wrote the work as 'dramma giocoso' but Muti's conception is not very funny while heavy on the drama. He has a top cast, headed by the then relatively unknown William Shimell as a menacing, raw-edged Don (a bit similar to Thomas Allen), and Sam Ramey as an opportunistic, sarcastic Leporello. The ladies are relatively heavy voiced, which fits the concept as a whole. Rootering's infra-bass makes a terrifying statue, and the death scene is the best on disc - added by the fantastic balance between orchestra and singers. The recording is way to reverberant, which is the only serious flaw of this issue.

There are a few great Don Giovanni's on disc, and this is the underdog in that group. Highly recommended!

Cheers,

EJ
