Interesting image of four chairs. The Emerson Quartet is known for performing while standing with the exception of the cello player who sits on a chair positioned on a small stage to bring him to the same level of the other three musicians.

At last, they've all gone out and I can do some listening.

On vinyl:

And on CD (both new to me, yeah, I know...):

Haim,

this is an AofF i've not heard, is it a nice one?

Too many chairs...

i think this is where one chair gets taken away when the musik stops at the end of each contrapunctus

but the winner is always the cellist  ...but i may be wrong here.

The version i'm playing has two guys seated by their harsichords...

This version gets very busy and brisk in places, one needs to be in the mood to enjoy it,

and i am really enjoying this right now : )

Ormandy's Roman Trilogy.

Reminds me of a sountrack of a Hollywood films from the 50s.

I have had this on vinyl for years but wanted a digital copy so used up some of an iTunes voucher to get it.

Ghastly recording quality. Have ordered a CD copy.

Debs,

I am afraid that the Emerson's string version is much more Andantive, pensive and in my mind goes  deeper. Like you said, it is a matter of a preferred mood and pace. The strings work better for me.

Ravel, Daphnis et Chloé: Charles Dutoit.

What a pretty piece.
