A good mix of emotions, starting with melancholy overtones the ensemble soon become inquisitive together, at times quite haunting and sometimes gaining a sleepy dreamy aura that promotes a better sense at ease.

This is in the main a pleasantly relaxed version set on 2 cd's totalling over 88 minutes,

and excellent value for money via Amazon.

Working my way through a few of the Tangerine Dream - Tree and Leaves releases from the mid 70's. Nice music to do DIY to on a Sunday.

James,

They are two bits of nice sounding thick vinyl.

No loudness wars.

I got them for a birthday pres yesterday..

I  went through 4 originals in the 70s/80s/90s played to death.

The German copy i bought a couple of years ago still sounds great and the original English copy i was given  when i got back into vinly is still the dogs bits.

Its good but not cheap.

That said,If you buy it now Its going to be worth £300 in a few weeks if you dont open it.

Sonata for Cello and Piano no 1 in F major, Op. 5 no 1

Variations (12) for Cello and Piano in F major on "Ein Mädchen oder Weibchen", Op. 66

Variations (7) for Cello and Piano on Mozart's "Bei Männern", WoO 46

Variations (12) for Cello and Piano in G major on a theme by Handel, WoO 45

Sonata for Cello and Piano no 3 in A major, Op. 69

Tending to prefer music written in minor keys, it is music like the A major sonata here that forces me, without question, to go against my natural grain.  But then again the credit must go to Beethoven; he knew what he was doing.  It is music that just brims with life and energy yet it still maintains enough tension, grunt, and even ethereal sadness (albeit very brief episodes).  I'd even think of it as furled brow happiness.

In the first movement, listen how it starts in A-major, A-minor, the dominant E-major and then eventually pulls you into the miracle of F-sharp minor.  To feel this under your fingers is simply sublime.  To make the point, this very short theme is repeated even higher in the register but this time in C-sharp minor.  This last minor theme probably doesn't even last one minute.

I think Gastinel and Guy make really good chamber partners together too.  There is a real sense of oneness/togetherness.
