After a few listens, finally I am digging the Prokofiev's Visions Fugitives.
This is his recital in Italy again.
Recordings dates are various from 1967 ~ 1972. Lukaskirche, Dresden.
[ADD] Berlin Classics © 1996 (compilation)
Walter Olbertz frequently plays the slower passages with a light touch of delicacy in the way I find so desirable, the faster pace works are neat enough to fascinate over, imho : )
If this was really recorded in a 'church' then it must have been well equipped with some state of the art studio enabling sound absorption, and top draw recording technology with some handy expert sound engineers.
Even stranger is the recording dates that are split up on many different sessions spanning a period of 5 years (i couldn't be bothered to write them all up) but the sound engineering is so consistently good one could think this was all recorded in one go, and so fresh it may as well of been recorded last week.
Digitally remastered to perfection in 1996, okay perhaps with a hint of analogue master tape brightness but i'm not complaining about that.
Presently available via Amazon uk (other sellers) new £2.90 for a 3 x CD box-set.

Box sets Vol.2 and 3 are also available but ridiculously expensive : (
Debs
Debs,
Notice you regularly return to this album, you must be on to a good thing. Haydn's sonatas are played often enough but so many performers seem to lack the imagination to make them sound more than just superficial. Brendel, on a modern grand of course, is my own favorite.
Cheers,
EJ
Hi EJ,
Brendel vs. Olbertz would be a good shoot-out.
Personally I like them both for caring about the sensitivity on slower passages...
I’ve only had a sample listen to the 4 cd Brendel / Haydn via 'Spotify' which is not the best means to be sure, but imo Brendel gives a more romantic feel, a nice light touch though but his sound seems more bubbly when the going gets fast. I would expect the bass resolution to be better with the later Philips (Decca?) digital recording.
I would say Olbertz is more polished and dynamic, but the sonatas on the 3 cd set has no fewer than nine different recording dates in four different years, so perhaps he spent some time getting in some special practise.
Although I’m no piano expert and don’t like to risk sounding pretentious, and besides...
being a harpsichord nerd my Haydn desert island box-set choice would be the Christine Schornsheim set!
The 4 CD Brendel CD set has almost doubled in price since i placed it in my wish list a few months ago.
My Olbertz 3 cd set is also available as a part of a 9 cd box-set (link below)
I’m hoping one day a used copy price will lower into my affordability range.

Incubus - If Not now When..This band are new to me, it's on it's first play at the moment. Liking it a lot. The sound quality of this CD is very good which makes a refreshing change to some I could mention of late.
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik Love that funky music. Another very good sounding CD
Giving the Audiovectors a work out!!
Got this today, an excellent collection. Has some Old Grey Whistle Test performances a Live Top Of The Pops performance as well as all the Hits over 2 cd's and all for a price of £5. You can't go wrong with this as an introduction or for the seasoned fan.

George Thorogood And the Destroyers - Better Than The Rest Got this from my local Oxfam on Vinyl this morning. Apparently recorded before they had a recording contract. You can tell they really wanted it, very raw and full of piss and vinegar. Marvellous stuff.
Wings - At The Speed Of Sound On Vinyl. This bloke can write a good tune, me thinks
On the Black 1969 sampler.
