Respighi: Pini di Roma

Giuseppe Sinopoli/NY Phil.

Decent sounding early digital. ( '91) Refreshing after listening to some old poorly done mono vinyls.

Better than good, i'll say an excellent plus performance....

Steven Myer is completely new to me, i feel no need to criticise his play which I sense has an agreeable focus with a keen depth of feel for the compositions, although being unfamiliar with the works on this disc so my opinions are ever-so humble…

Four different composers - but fit okay together as a strait play though album, all recorded (to stunning quality!) at the Ruth Lilly Concert Hall, DeHaan Fine Arts Centre, University of Indianapolis, January 2007.

My concerns of not understanding the Copland are confirmed again… here it's strangely bitty. I must admit having trouble understanding Copland's work although some parts of this 11 minutes of Piano Variations are actually very nice to my ears so it's not all puzzle of misplaced notes and peculiar cords.

Most of the time is pleasantly used tinkling around on Debussy's preludes, i'm really taking a shine to this composer... and want to investigate him more.

So three thumbs up altogether, bargain price, fab recording, and stimulating music - including some nice bass laden rumble-belly piano sounds : )

So yes, do buy a copy, i think you'll enjoy it too.

Part 3 of Karajan's Ring cycle. You have to invest the time and effort and give up part of your hearing, marital bliss and structural integrity of the house, but the experience of listening to the Ring (14+ hours) remains mind blowing!

Karajan's is an excellent recording. He avoids the bombastic, and instead weaves a gorgeous soundscape which allow his - excellent - singers to excel. Climaxes are given their full due. One of my favorites.

Cheers,

EJ

Love the Amazon pricing: "New (2) from $135, Used (2) from $55." I wonder how long it will take the discs to be snatched at these bargain rates.
