Only sample playing the first LP, music seems okay at first listen,
but i really need to give this an evening play in the armchair with glass of red,
and i really need to read the libretto to know what's going on.
The records are in good nick but need cleaning.
Can't see a date anywhere, not on the vinyl, the label, libretto or box...
Debs
Debs,
Allow me. This recording was made in 1963, one of the first by Vaclav Neumann who a few years later became chief of the renowned Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. Janacek's operas are - relatively speaking - difficult fare. It helps to see them in the opera house or on video first, to get a feel for the 'vibe'.

On the Original 1974 Black!
Can a digital recording be scarce, in this day and age? This one comes close - I had been looking or Haitink's 1981 recording with the Concertgebouw for over ten years before I came across it earlier this evening, at my Naim-summer-event hosting dealer. Dirt cheap, no less.
Being from 1981, the early digital recording quality is not great - in fact it made a great sample disc for the event to trip 'lesser' gear (the 555 coped well) - but the performance is... breathtaking. Can't put it in any other way, this was definitely worth waiting for.
I'm a happy camper!
Cheers,
EJ

This is next. With thanks to Doug who showed me that between 48 and 32, the number 33 has its place. I wonder if Beethoven would have composed another 9 variations, if had he known the true meaning of life (or, more accurately, the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything).
Cheers,

Yes, I have the Thimar disc. My favorite Brahem is Le Pas Du Chat Noir.
Again, Marcelle Meyer playing Rameau. Just can't get enough of it. Kuma, I wonder if you have any of her LPs.
Haim,
No. But I'll look out for one.
Does she play like Horowitz?
Kuma,
Not very familiar with Horowitz. I have just one LP of his playing Scarlatti. Angela Hewitt has definitely a similar style to Meyer, particularly with Rameau's music.
