Britten's three suites for cello. We're firmly in 'modern' classical music territory here, although Britten  never stoops to atonality in these works and time and again quotes from Bach's suites. This is my first recording of these works, so can't comment on the performances besides the fact that Wispelwey sounds wholly committed and technically brilliant. Recordingwise, it doesn't get any better.

I've seen Wispelwey play a couple of times (last in a performance of a Haydn concerto), but am only now finding out how fantastic many of his recordings are, in the wake of my search for a new recording of the Dvorak concerto. The Shostakovich concerti will be next.

Cheers,

A sing along record from The Plastic People of the Universe

A cross between Frank Zappa, the Fugs and Floh De Cologne, but sung in Czech except for Angel's Hair which I think is in English. Very good though and quite amazing that they were able to release this in 1975.

Concertos 22 and 23. This particular performance of #22 is hands down the best I ever heard.

One of the worst covers I've ever seen but the sound of this SACD is stunning. Mastered by Steve Hoffman.

Yup - have it on pre-order. Has been a long time coming. Do you have Big Session, similar vein but not just June Tabor guesting?

Posted on: 02 September 2011 by BigH47

No I don't have Big Session. Will investigate.

Just booked tickets for Brighton 27 Nov, June and Oysterband.
