Had to resort to iTunes as my CDP seems to have given up playing CDRs:-

On CD:

First impression? Quite frankly, underwhelming and, in places, actually dull.

Bernstein's Tristan & Isolde: the most intense but also slowest of all. Just the overture lasts almost 15 minutes, and the original CD issue took 5 discs. Taking Furtwängler's RAI Ring project as example, Bernstein recorded one act at a time in front of an audience that was screened for coughers. Recording quality is satisfactory, not as detailed as the sound that DG gave Kleiber around the same time but more than excellent for a live recording - some audible edits, no audience noise, no applause. My favorite recording of this opera.
Cheers,
EJ
