Giulini's Trovatore was one of DG's prestige projects from the early 80s - a follow-up from his successful Rigoletto. The conducting is vintage late Giulini: lyrical, gorgeous and autumnal, excitement coming from within. Whether this approach lends itself to Trovatore has been a topic of discussion since this recording was published. Personally I think it works.

Singing is mixed: the male voices are without exception superb, Domingo at his best. The women are not bad, but less distinguished - Rosalind Plowright is a powerful but not very interesting Leonora, and Brigitte Fassbaender sounds out of place although dramatically committed.

Overall, a great recording of one of Verdi's most accessible operas. If only Katia Ricciarelli and Shirley Verrett had been available...

Cheers,

EJ
