The beginning of the first track sounds very similar to the ‘League of Gentlemen’ theme... perhaps it is (?)

Although this is not really given over to a sinister feel, it's jazzy, a bit jumpy with carefree aspirations.

I am liking this

+1 EJ

Fall and the coming of colder weather and winter tends to be the time of year where I am drawn into  Schubert's magic and listen most extensively.  I find the same magic heard in the Fantasie woven throughout Schubert's oeuvre whether that be in the piano music, chamber or lieder etc.   Schubert's music is very special to me.

PS:  As if you didn't know, the cover art is entitled, "The Hapless Golfer."   At this point in the story the golfer on the left is resolving to give lawn bowling a try as just prior to this he lost his temper by throwing his last club out into the ocean to where his last ball ended up.  His partner has refused to help him anymore by doing the same and is philosophizing about reaping what you sow and that tomorrow will be another day...

Doug,

Agree. Most of Schubert's greatest works have a strong undercurrent of sorrow, despair, loss of hope and love (and golf balls), depression, loneliness, broken clubs and tragedy, and in many variations and combinations. For a comprehensive overview of the dark depths of the soul, no other composer before or since has come close.

Now listening to Winterreise, in Thomas Hampson's incomparable rendition (signed copy).

Cheers,

EJ
