Renaud Capucon is fast becoming the new Frank Peter Zimmermann: exceedingly good musicianship, which more than makes up for the lack of the last ounce of individuality. Still, he's really good in the Beethoven, there are times in the first movement that he reminds me of Mullova, even bettering her for tonal beauty. Nezet-Seguin provides absolutely great support, and recording quality is as close to ideal as I've heard. Over the past year or so, this record has become my Beethoven violin concerto of choice (next to Henryk Szerying's beautiful 70s account for Philips).

The Korngold is played straight, and I hate to say it, but my feeling is that the music isn't good enough to withstand this honest treatment.

Cheers,

EJ
