In 1995, when this set was finally released after five years in the freezer, the value proposition must have been questionable: both Pavarotti and Zubin Mehta were no longer that popular with the 'serious' classical music crowd, due to their cross-over antics. I certainly did not even look when it was offered at mid-price as part of an action. Critical reception was also not good.

Boy were we wrong. This set is still available, and it is one of the most engaging Trovatores I have heard. Except for Pav and Verrett, none of the cast or the chorus is as good as or better than other recorded operas. However, Mehta (on good form) and the producer, Christopher Raeburn, ensured that the performance comes together beautifully. Outstanding recording quality, too.

Cheers,

CBS 2 x LP box-set (p) 1976

Haim,

A different kind of Liszt playing from another Georgian pianist!  I believe both Nino Gvetadze and Khatia Buniatishvili are from Tbilisi or at least they both studied at the Tbilisi State Conservatoire.

Starting another fantastic journey through the Annees de Pelerinage which exemplifies again what a fine composer Franz Liszt was.

Hi Haim,

Must confess I was slightly disappointed with his last Chopin album, but he's back on form here. He takes his piano wholeheartedly into Bach territory, and first impression is a good blend of the romantic and authentic Bach. Great playing and sound, no supercharged faster-than-fast interpretation, and also less extreme than his Scarlatti. I haven't heard his Italian Concertos, so can't compare.

Definitely a keeper, and now on the lookout for other recommended versions to compare!

Cheers,

EJ

JJ Cale - Really.   Not a bad debut album either.
