That would be a good summary.

Debs

Debs, Ultramarine were (are?) a great band.

Have you heard this?

It's even better than Kingdoms -

one of the Top 10 albums of the 1990s IMNSHO.

In fact, I'm off to fire up the Sondek to listen to it now...

Hi Kev,

Yes, i have both albums on CD & vinyl.

I would say they're probably two lesser known about

and very underestimated albums of the 90's...

Thanks for reminding me about the vinyl, off to play mine now! : )

Wonderful album and as good as soundtracks get (even better than Nighthawks and Godzilla Final Wars by Sir Keith Emerson - rotten films by all accounts, great music - I only have the soundtracks: oh and Live and Let Die by Sir Paul).

It is very hard to find anything else by Paul Giovanni, which is shame. The Wicker Man is a great film too, scares the hell out of me, but really only makes full sense in the uncut version, which shows Edward Woodward going to the Island so we understand why. I always wish his boat would start,

The music on this though stands alone and could be enjoyed even by someone who has not seen the film - the Landlords Daughter and Willow's Song are stand out songs. Willow's Song reminds me of Vashti (Bunyan) with a bit of Nico (Christa Päffgen) thrown in.

I think Paul was inspired by Shirley Collins' Anthems in Eden Suite, but no evcidence of such. It sounds like a song cycle. The bag pipes on Oranges and Lemons are always haunting.

All the best, Guy

Yes, Kev, me also, although i'm sure my original vinyl dug a bit deeper in SQ than this newer vinyl-180 ?

Hi Debs - both my "Replicas" and "PP" are original '79 pressings and they are pretty good.

On Ultramarine, I have the "Folk" album on CD (very different) and their last album "Users Guide" (again very different - all the folky elements are gone, it's entirely electronic), plus various EPs and singles. "Bel Air" I don't know at all - I must pick it up.

‘Bel Air’ isn’t folky at all, it’s jazzy and very easy going, won’t blow your sock off but may cheer you up a little.

I thinks it’s deceptive, [sometimes less is more] a lightweight electro album backed up with some very good musicianship, and not to mention some hints of Art of Noise.

My CD copy sound great for SQ engineering,

but my vinyl [clear vinyl] is just marvelous : )
