Where on the dial is realistic?

'10' on the 282 - a credible impression of a Steinway as heard from row 5...

Wrong way round, Stu. Next time you're in the neighborhood let me know and I'll take you to a piano recital. I'll book tickets for row 5.

Wispelwey's first traversal of the suites is the most lively and spontaneous I've heard. Some seriously good playing here, and recorded to perfection (but very close: every stroke, hold, breath intake, groan or pant is heard clearly). Highly recommended!

EJ,

Thanks i will take you up on that if ever i am in your neck of the woods.

My sister could play from the age of three and my mother could play.

My parents bought a oak grand Steinway for her when she was 12.they pulled a outside wall down of our house  to get it into the music room,we had new windows put in at the same time though.

When they sold the house years later it had to stay there.

My brother teaches the piano and my father learnt in the 80s but he can only play with music infront of him.

No Naim system i have heard sounds like any live piano being played at its best or worst.

Adrian has a black one not sure of the make though? In his listening room.

John Honeyball has a nice one.

I just wish i could play.

Stu,

Thanks for sharing. I'm strictly consumer myself, struggled to play for years, then gave it up when I went to university and realized that I much rather listen to others doing it really, really well. In terms of reproduction, of course it remains an abstraction - but with some recordings I'm still amazed at how much is accurately conveyed. Addicting stuff.

Cheers,

EJ
