Thanks. I looked up the Jan Bang on samadhisound and Boomkat as soon as I saw you post it late one evening last week, right after my last Supersilent 10 post, I think. If I wasn't half asleep at the time, I'd have replied then! On the to do list.

Glad you like it BigH. They are a very good band. There are some other good albums to look out for - I have "Picaresque", "Her Majesty The Decemberists", "The Crane Wife" & "Castaways And Cutouts" as well as "Hazards Of Love". I guess you will try them out on Spotify? As Pat mentions the new album "The King Is Dead" comes out next Monday, 17th. They are touring as well in March, I see them in Manchester on the 10th - I'm not sure if they are playing down your way though?

This "I Medici" is part of an ongoing series of unknown Verismo works, recorded by Alberto Veronesi for Deutsche Grammophon. Earlier issues in this series included Mascagni's "L'amico Fritz", Puccini's debut "Edgar", and discs with rarities from Leoncavallo and Puccini. Next up is Giordano's "Fedora".

The works themselves...have not become popular for a reason, but have their moments. So far the performances have been truly excellent, favoring the music over the histrionics that sometimes are associated with the era (no sobs, limited scoops). Placido Domingo has taken center stage in most of the recordings. The man's a marvel: he sounds brilliant, even without considering the fact that he's now part time baritone, and almost twice my age. The other hero is Alberto Veronesi, who's proven to be an excellent champion for these works.

Kudos for Universal for undertaking this series, which can't be easy money for them!
