For some things there is a right way to do things and a wrong way.  I do not believe this view should coincide with the art of making music.  I suppose many people who might not accept a reading from Pogorelich may more than likely prefer a mainstream or even a historically correct approach.  While I have nothing against this approach I find that I appreciate someone like Ivo Pogorelich because he is not afraid to simply focus on music making that is exciting and at the same time thought provoking.  At the same time there are very few that are at such an exalted level technically as well. Why this is important is that he has at his disposal a seemingly unlimited capability to provide a listener with endless possibilities and ideas in a natural way.

I don't think I could say it better than Jeremy Siepmann in his booklet notes where he says, "His performances are hypotheses, not pronouncements, questions not prophesies."
