Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande, recorded by Abbado/DG in competition with Dutoit/Decca. Abbado had the best Pelléas of the moment, Le Roux, who was scheduled to sing with Dutoit but backed out at the last moment for this recording. Dutoit had the best Mélisande of the moment, Colette Alloit-Lugaz. As it is, both recordings turned out very different and both belong to the top of the many recordings of Pelléas. Abbado is fast, forward, and dramatic, outstandingly well sung, whereas Dutoit treats the work far more as a symphonic poem, bringing out time and again the gorgeous melodies that litter the score.

Re-mastered and a very welcome addition that I foolishly missed on their first outing.

Kevin Ayers from 1978 and 1980.
